We had too much salad.

The 5th Organic Planet Festival at Halvorsen Park in Eureka was a success. The weather was mostly cold and foggy but the people were warm and fuzzy.

LoCura was the first band to take to the big stage and they got the crowd warmed up on this cold day.

The fasion show was pretty cool and guest speaker Mike McGrath didn't mince words when defining organic verses Miracle Grow and Round Up.

The Del McCoury Band was pure bluegrass and drew on Del's 50 years in the business.

KHUM and their magic equipment that was plugged into the mixer board did a fantastic job of broadcasting the music of their set to those that could not make the gig. Larry, you did a great job. I caught part of the set on my new car stereo from Eureka Car Stereo (shameless plug).
We did some broadcasts on am 1480 but it is a talk station so I focused mostly on interviews and information. We did sneak some Del McCoury band in on one of the breaks.

Tanya Stephens was a little late getting on but the played until it was almost dark, and made up for the late start. She had some inspiring words about keeping families together and love and harmony and stuff. She was great!

Wildberries, Eureka Natural Foods and the North Coast Co-op had enough salad for a sunny day so they had some left over.

There was a petting zoo with miniature goats, organic food, organic clothing and so many eco groovy booths that I can't name them all.

If you didn't make it, you should keep your calender open for next year.

Heatwave in Eureka!

Temperatures hit 81 degrees in the shade at 4 pm today at our South Broadway studios.
Usually we get 3 different temps. All three fm studios have separate thermometers and the one facing the bay usually reads about 3 to 5 degrees lower than the other two. Not today.
We are still wearing clothes.
Update: We just got word at 4:20 pm today that rain drops were falling just up the road on Humboldt Hill.

Disrespect or Ignorance?

Learning that U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy died overnight, I was looking for flags today. I don't know if the private sector is just ignorant or disrespectful. The only building that I saw with a flag at half mast was the county building next door to the radio station I work at.

All the private sector flags I saw didn't get it right.

Killer Zombie Lizard Chicken Eggs

One of our chickens is part alien, or lizard chicken.

The nice little brown eggs from the other two chickens contrasts the hideous monstrosity of an egg that is the second known egg this hen has laid that we know of. The first one looked the same but before I could get a picture, a flying monkey came by and swooped it up and took it to Wyoming for Dick Cheney's breakfast.

Fisherman Collapses And Dies At Freshwater Lagoon Today.

I'm a bit short on details. Here is what I know.

A 72 year old male was fishing in the ocean from the beach, across from Freshwater Lagoon just south or the town of Orick this afternoon.
The man was on his way back to the parking area next to U.S. Highway 101 with a bucket of smelt. He stopped and sat down about half way to the road. He then complained to someone that he didn't feel good and collapsed at around 3:30 pm on the beach. Rescue workers tried to revive him for about 45 minutes, but he died there on the sand.
When I arrived, officials were waiting for the coroner.
Update: His name is Tom Campbell. He lived on Old Arcata Road and is survived by his wife and children. Coroner said he had a history of heart conditions. Heart attack is suspected.

If Most Of Us Want It, Why Can't We Get IT?

It ain't over till' it's over.
So a few people drank the tea. and got their news from corporations that care not to tell you the truth. They got together with the large corporations that had a stake in taking down the working class and tried to keep the rest of us from fixing the health care problem going on here in the U.S.
There is still time to influence our law makers as much as the lobbying firms of the big health care companies are.
They along with coal, gas and oil industries are funding some of these tea party patriots directly and indirectly.

We have to flood our Representatives with phone calls and emails.
Obama has said he can't do this stuff without our help. Call the White House and tell him you support Single Payer and or a Public Option. 1-202-456-1111.
Then give your senators and congress person a call, Don't let the few take away the progress of the many again.

Big Boat, Small Harbor

I walked to the light house in Trinidad today and looked out into the bay and saw this huge boat, small ship?
Salmon season opens on Saturday, the 29th and goes until Monday, September 7th.
Not sure who owns the boat/ship. They could be up here for the salmon season. The ship/boat has what appears on the back deck to be a boat about as big as most of the ones in the harbor.
Maybe they were just passing by and couldn't resist dropping anchor to enjoy the great weather today.

Leaked memo: Big Oil manufacturing ‘Energy Citizen’ rallies to oppose clean energy reform.

By Brad Johnson at Thinkprogress.org
The American oil industry, working with a coalition of business interests, plans to manufacture rallies in opposition to clean energy reform, an internal document reveals. According to the plan acquired by Greenpeace, the American Petroleum Institute (API) will “coordinate transportation” for oil industry employees to “Energy Citizen” rallies targeting U.S. Senators in 21 states. The document’s author, API president Jack Gerard, discusses how it is “important that our views” supplant “constituents’ views”:

The objective of these rallies is to put a human face on the impacts of unsound energy policy and to aim a loud message at those states’ U.S. Senators to avoid the mistakes embodied in the House climate bill and the Obama Administration’s tax increases on our industry. Senate Majority Leader Senator Harry Reid reportedly has pushed back consideration of climate legislation to late September to allow Senators time to get their constituents’ views during the August recess. It’s important that our views be heard.

API’s membership, which includes ExxonMobil, GE, and Halliburton, will join “allies from a broad range of interests: the Chamber of Commerce and National Association of Manufacturing, the trucking industry, the agricultural sector, small business, and many others” to create these Astroturf rallies to protect their dirty energy profits at the expense of the planet.

Protests At Cardin Town Hall Feature AFP Booth, ‘Death Panel’ Warnings, And Obama-Hitler Signs

The Tea Party Patriots are starting to lose it on a national level. These photos are from ThinkProgress.org.

Click the headline for the post to see story from ThinkProgress.
The local TEA Baggers so called grass roots movement has found enough money to charter a bus to take people from Humboldt County to a protest in Sacramento on August 28th. These people are well funded and well organized. They have matching clothes and signs.

Problems with the Mike Malloy Show

North Coast fans of Mike Malloy are adjusting their volumes up and down tonight to hear the Mike Malloy show. A problem (we think it is a mixer in Georgia) has Mike Malloy faint and hard to hear. They have tried switching channels on the mixer and checked satellite connections and feeds and are trying to work out the problems. Hopefully they will have it fixed by tomorrow. Until then, sorry about the volume fluctuations at the station that used to be listed in the name of my blog.

Last Day for 2009 Humboldt Crabs Baseball Today!

The summer baseball season for the Humboldt Crabs ends today. The final game is at 12:30pm today at the Arcata Ball Park. The Crabs are set to have the best year ever in attendance this year. The broadcasts were better due to Internet based Skype broadcasts. There were some problems at the start of the season with the feed dropping but Rick Levin, the tech. guy for the Crabs got everything dialed in and the broadcast quality was superior to anything in the past.
pictured in the broadcast booth are (right to left the back of their heads) Hok Holcomb, KGOE's own Dana Riebl and Benjamin aka the Professor.

Get Crabs today or wait till next year!

Where Are The Free Speech Zones?

The people disrupting the town hall meetings across the country lately,
would have been relegated to free speech zones during the past administration.
Where are the barbed wire parking lots that people with t shirts voicing a different opinion than the administration were sent to in the past? Is Obama afraid to piss off the people that wouldn't vote for him anyway? Should he stoop to the policies of the past that screened people at town hall meetings and kept away those with voices of distention?

I have talked to many in the Tea Party Patriots camp and none of them could tell me why a single payer health care system wouldn't work. They just seem to have a set of talking points and don't want the government to take over their Medicare. I have news for them, Medicare is a government run program.

These people should be allowed to protest without being behind barbed wire and a block away. I support that. I don't support their disruption of the political process of us deciding what form of health care would keep most of us healthy and working.

I don't want a corporate suit deciding which treatments I am covered for and which would make them more profit if I were denied proper treatment for my medical problem.
If they were forced to compete with a government option, they might make better decisions.
If they were forced to compete with a Single Payer option, they might decide to go into the auto insurance business, or come up with some reasons that we should buy their expanded insurance.

Single payer should not exclude private insurance companies from offering services that the public wants. Those from other countries should always be able to come to the U.S.A. to get the kind of health care that only the rich can afford. That should not change just because the rest of us have some sort of basic coverage.

The only thing that should change would be the likelihood that some poor person with a nasty disease would give it to us because they cannot afford to have it looked at.

Education and money will not inoculate you from disease. We breathe and you breathe what we exhale.

Tuesday Night on Humboldt Bay

I came back from Raggae Risng and went on a tour of Humboldt Bay on the Madaket. It is the the oldest continuously operated passenger vessel in the U.S. They boast the smallest licensed cocktail lounge in California. The boat was built in 1910 and is in great shape.
I like the first picture because, there's nothing like bird on a stick.

A Sign Of Distress?

I saw the California flag flying upside down yesterday at one of the federal buildings. I caught the flag person as they were coming out to take it down. Asked them what the deal was. They said it was a mistake. I decided not to name the location as we all make mistakes and I didn't want someone to get into trouble. It just goes to show you what you can miss if you don't look up!

Civil Rights Attorney Files Lawsuit Against Eureka Police and Humboldt County Sheriff's Department

Civil Rights Attorney Brian Claypool announced today that 3 lawsuits have been filed against the Humboldt County Sheriff's Department and the Eureka Police Department.

The lawsuits, filed in Federal Court in San Francisco and Oakland stem from the deaths of Martin Cotton Jr. , Chris Burgess and Peter Stewart. All three died while in the custody of local law enforcement in the last 2 and a half years.

A fourth lawsuit is pending in the case of James Hans Peters, whom police say committed suicide. Claypool said he didn't think that Peters committed suicide and sited a couple of factors. 1. The injuries were not consistent with suicide. 2. Peters was happy and excited about getting out of jail and was making plans for his future

Brian Claypool is asking the public to get involved. He said that there were witnesses in these cases that won't come forward because they fear police retaliation. He urged those that know anything about these cases to come forward and contact him.
I have his number if anyone wants to help out in any of these cases.
Send me an email with your info and I will have him get in touch with you.
