North Coast Stand Down This Weekend In Ferndale

If you know any military veterans, this event is for them. Imagine if you will, services that are normally spread out over the County and points beyond, all brought together in one convenient location.

DMV, medical, tax help, insurance issues, banking, the courts and justice system, information on benefits for surviving wives of veterans and more.

There will be food at the kitchen, a BBQ with tri-tip, free haircuts, help for pets of veterans including food and boarding for the three day event.
Some vets sleep in bunks but some choose to put up a tent and have a camp fire. Still others just stop by for a day and see if there are some services or benefits they were unaware of that might be of help to them.
For some, it's 3 days off the streets with showers and food and somewhere to sleep.

For info on V.A. benefits, vets are asked to bring their DD214. That's a DD two fourteen not two one four as I have been corrected. This will enable volunteers to get paper work moving faster and have better access to know what you might be entitled to.

The North Coast Stand Down starts this Friday, October 2nd. at 8:00 am. and goes through
12-noon Sunday October 4th.
Ferndale Fairgrounds, Ferndale California.
Transportation can be arranged for you if you can't get there.

If you know of any vets that could use some help, this is your chance to help them get it.

Study: 45,000 Americans die each year for lack of insurance

From The RawStory.com
Harvard researchers published Thursday in the American Journal of Public Health a study which reveals roughly 45,000 American adults die every year because they are not covered by health insurance.

Researchers specifically noted that lack of health insurance now kills more adults than kidney disease.
The American Journal of Public Health is a subscription-only service. Physics.org reported

Trying To Separate The Pope From The Progressives

Some really smart engineers are currently working on setting a trap at the tower for 1480 am here in Eureka. The trap, as it is called, is to prevent transmission problems occurring since Catholic radio station KIHH 1400 am entered into the market about a year ago. In certain areas, people can't hear 1480 am due to interference from 1400 am. This trap and one installed on the am tower that KIHH 1400 am shares and one on the 1340 kata tower in Arcata should solve all of the transmission problems that came about when the Catholics came to town.

Whistleblower: Baucus health bill an ‘absolute gift’ to insurers

The Private Mandate Sausage Machine By Dennis Kucinich

Dear Friends,

It is said one should not ask how sausage or laws are made. Are you concerned about a public option? Let me share with you some insight about health care legislation which may not be good for your health.
A lesson in politics. The Kucinich Prediction: Here's what's going to happen ...

House will make a big deal about keeping/putting a public option in HR3200 because it competes with insurance companies and will keep insurance rates low.

The White House will refer to the President's speech last week where he spoke favorably of the public option.

The Senate will kill the competitive public option in favor of non-competitive "co-ops". Senate leaders like Kent Conrad have said the votes to pass a public option were never there in the Senate.

The bill will come to a House-Senate Conference Committee without the public option.

House Democrats will be told to support the conference report on the legislation to support the President.

The bill will pass, not with a "public option" but with a private mandate requiring 30 million uninsured to buy private health insurance (if one doesn't already have it). If you are broke, you may get a subsidy. If you are not broke, you will get a fine if you do not purchase insurance.

This legislative sausage will be celebrated as a new breakthrough and will be packaged as health insurance reform. However, the bill may require a Surgeon General's warning label: Your Money or Your Life!

The bill that Congress passes may pale in comparison to the bill that millions of Americans will get every month/year for having or not having private health insurance.

It will take four years for the new legislation to go into effect. During that time we are going to build a constituency of millions in support of real health care, a constituency which will be recognized and a cause which is right and just: Health Care as a Civil Right.

Join our efforts. Sign the petition. Contribute. Insure a democratic future.

Thank you.

Dennis Kucinich

Some Sports Aren't Covered On ESPN

Just another example of local sports not being covered by the sporting press.
There are so many things to do here on the North Coast that involve sports , but don't involve a score.
Kayaking, hiking, rafting, fishing, biking and camping are some of the more obvious.
Every now and then you run across something you don't see every day.  These guys were enjoying the sport of rock climbing and chose a nice spot on Moonstone Beach last weekend.

THE TOP 40 REASONS TO DOUBT THE OFFICIAL STORY OF SEPTEMBER 11th, 2001

Something to consider on the 8th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
If you missed Ray McGovern and Sibel Edmonds sworn deposition on the Mike Malloy show hosted by Brad Freedman Thursday night, you should at least click the headline of this post to see the 40 questions that remain unanswered 8 years after the fact.
Brad Freedman is archiving the shows at his web site. Just click his name above to get there.
There is a lot we don't know about what happened that day. One thing we do know is that on 9/11, three steel structure sky scrapers turned to jello. This has never happened before.
The Pentagon was successfully attacked without firing a single shot.
This has never happened before.
There were many warnings.
Based on the official story, I can't see how anyone would ever feel safe in a steel building.
Unless...?

Bill Has Died

I learned that Bill, the Belgian Draft horse, died Friday Night of an apparent heart attack.

The 2300 pound horse was part of a team called The Redwood Express that was gearing up for regular outings in Trinidad.

A hitching post is even being added to the new Trinidad Museum and park for The Redwood Express.

A very sad Susan Morton who owns the horses said that she will find another horse and continue on with her business plans for horse drawn carriage rides through Trinidad.

Forced To Buy Health Insurance?

During the local town hall with Congressman Mike Thompson at Redwood Acres, Mr. Thompson said that all 3 health care bills in the house would require everyone to purchase health insurance. He said that in the same way you have to purchase auto insurance, you will have to purchase health insurance..

Mr. Thompson forgets that many in Humboldt County don't drive or own cars. For them, burning fossil fuels and spending money on insurance and mechanics is a waste of time and resources. His analogy of everyone being required to purchase insurance fell on deaf ears to those people that know the difference between cars and human bodies.

Fact is, you don't have to have auto insurance if you don't drive or own a car.

If this is progressive health insurance reform, I suggest they scrap it and try again.

A public option would make the situation more tolerable but they are talking about doing away with that. If that leaves us with only a couple of restrictions on Insurance companies, like they have to take you if you have a pre existing condition and you can keep paying your premiums if you loose your job, I say scrap it and start over.

Being forced to do business with a private corporation is not what progressives had in mind for health care reform. How will this stop the continued rise in rates?
Mr. Thompson let the cat out of the bag. He answered our questions, even if we didn't like the answers.

President Obama will address the country on Wednesday about health care. If he caves in to the special interests of the insurance industry and fails to back a public option, this whole progressive movement has no leader. It is up to the democrats to own up to why they were put in power. If they don't respect the people, they will pay the price in the next election.

Manifest Positivity

Dave Berman has a new project.  Actually, it is something he has been working on for a long time and I think it is worth while.
This cartoon from David Swanson is just a piece of the puzzle that is Manifest Positivity.  The cool thing about this is,  it includes everyone!
Check out the blog and all of the positive, interesting ideas set forth in this blog by ordinary people with something to add to the big picture.

Transgender discrimination at McKinleyville Rite Aid

I used to frequent this store. Now I get to find out why everyone likes Limas so much.
In reality, I don't purchase many prescriptions. I did like to buy DVD's, vitamins, shampoo, razors and soap.
Even used to do some Christmas shopping there. No more.
Check out this story at the Humboldt Herald.
