“Mr. Walker, if you’re listening: We know pretty well know who you work for. Now let me tell you who we work for,”

An inspiring speech made by a member of the Wisconsin police union, explaining why they’ve chosen to resist the governor’s anti-union agenda. “Mr. Walker, if you’re listening: We know pretty well know who you work for. Now let me tell you who we work for,” he said, eliciting a round of cheers from the crowd.

Upcoming Meeting on Avenue of the Giants Four Bridges Project

UPCOMING PUBLIC SCOPING MEETING ON
AVENUE OF THE GIANTS FOUR BRIDGES PROJECT

Eureka – Caltrans announced today that a public scoping meeting will be held on Monday, February 28, 2011, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM, at the Humboldt Redwoods State Park Visitor Center for the Avenue of the Giants Four Bridges Project.  This project proposes to upgrade existing bridge railing to current standards and widen bridge decks at Ohman Creek Bridge, Elk Creek Bridge, Bridge Creek Bridge, and Bear Creek Bridge on Route 254, also known as Avenue of the Giants.  A bridge replacement of the Bridge Creek Bridge is also being studied due to potential structural deficiencies at this location.

“Though we are several years away from construction on this project, we want to gather public input at this early stage to assist in our analysis of potential impacts,” said Richard Mullen, Caltrans Project Manager.  “The four bridges included in this project were all built more than 50 years ago and are in need of rail upgrades.  The proposed four foot shoulders would also better accommodate recreational use throughout the Avenue.”

The Humboldt Redwoods State Park Visitor Center is located in Weott at 17119 Avenue of the Giants.  For more information on this project, please visit www.dot.ca.gov/dist1/d1projects/254_bridges/ or contact Richard Mullen at Richard_Mullen@dot.ca.gov or 707-441-5877.

Dirty Air Triggers More Heart Attacks Than Cocaine

(Reuters) - Air pollution triggers more heart attacks than using cocaine and poses as high a risk of sparking a heart attack as alcohol, coffee and physical exertion, scientists said on Thursday.
Sex, anger, marijuana use and chest or respiratory infections and can also trigger heart attacks to different extents, the researchers said, but air pollution, particularly in heavy traffic, is the major culprit.

The story says sitting in heavy traffic is the worst.  I am so glad I left So. Cal.
The Koch Brothers have a lot invested in dirty air.  We should uninvest in it.

Dangerous Conditions For Local Houseless Population

My friend Bill had this on his blog and it should be passed along.
The forecast for the next two days is for rain, hail, snow and sub freezing temperatures down to 23 degrees in Eureka and colder in the mountains.  Please if you are a church or a civic organization in Eureka and Humboldt that can take in a homeless person, or family please post your information below in the comments.  Our governments seem to be unable to provide this simple humanitarian assistance to our homeless brothers and sisters so churches must step forward.  This is the kind of weather that kills people.

In another post bill added:\
… Record low maximum temperature set at Crescent City CA Airport…
A record low maximum temperature of 44 degrees was set at Crescent City
CA Airport (kcec) today. This breaks the old record of 49 degrees set in 1951.
… Record low maximum temperature set at Arcata/McKinleyville CA Airport…
A record low maximum temperature of 44 degrees was set at Arcata/McKinleyville
Airport (kacv) today. This breaks the old record of 48 degrees set in both 1993
and 1996.
have a peaceful day,
Bill

Union Busting Comes To California In The Form Of AB 961

Mansoor introduces bill to stop pension bargaining

The Costa Mesa state assemblyman's bill would end collective bargaining of pension benefits for state employees.

COSTA MESA — Assemblyman Allan Mansoor, who never shied away from a policy battle as mayor of Costa Mesa, now is proposing state legislation that would remove collective bargaining for public employee pensions in California.
Mansoor's office announced Tuesday that he's proposing Assembly Bill 961, which would end collective bargaining for pension benefits for state employees.
"As a former deputy sheriff and union member, I know how the process works," said in a phone interview from Sacramento.
"The public employee unions have all the power to influence politicians and it's the taxpayer with no one at the table advocating on their behalf … it's gotten way out of control and the taxpayer should not have to pay increasingly higher amounts," he said.

The Koch Brothers Got Thier Fortune From Stealing And Working For The Soviets

The Roots of Stalin in the Tea Party Movement

The Koch family, America's biggest financial backers of the Tea Party, would not be the billionaires they are today were it not for the godless empire of the USSR.

The Tea Party movement's dirty little secret is that its chief financial backers owe their family fortune to the granddaddy of all their hatred: Stalin's godless empire of the USSR. The secretive oil billionaires of the Koch family, the main supporters of the right-wing groups that orchestrated the Tea Party movement, would not have the means to bankroll their favorite causes had it not been for the pile of money the family made working for the Bolsheviks in the late 1920s and early 1930s, building refineries, training Communist engineers and laying down the foundation of Soviet oil infrastructure.

It's Time To Clean Out The Green House

This is the time of year to pull the dead tomato vines, clear out all the containers and basically remove everything from the green house that could hide mites, slugs, fungi or other nasties. I will empty it down to the wire metal shelves and the pavers on the floor.  I will then sweep the floor and then do a light power wash followed  with a weak mixture of bleach and water on the entire inside.  I will leave the doors open half way to allow it to vent and dry.  This will kill any mold spores and piss off anything else that thought my greenhouse would make a good place to live.
All opened bags of potting soil will be used in the outside garden and will not be reintroduced to the green house this year.  I'll let the place sit and air out after this for at least a week before planting a beer slug trap and getting things in order for this years planting.  Mold can be a problem if there is not proper air circulation.  My dad planted the tomatoes last year and didn't use any wire baskets for them to climb on.  They took over the entire floor.  This allowed a little mold to grow and made it hard to pick the tomatoes. The experts say to bag up and throw away any old vines or burn them.  They would probably have a problem with my using bleach to clean the panels, shelves and floor.  I welcome alternate suggestions for this as I won't be doing it until next weekend.
I have new baskets and am preparing to move the pavers over one row so that I don't plant in the same soil as last year.  We plant the tomatoes right in ground inside the green house.  I will also install a fan to move the air a bit like pot farmers use.  Another change is, I want to do drip irrigation for the tomatoes that are in the ground to avoid watering any of the leaves.
I am excited about this years crop.  I found three almost ripe tomatoes when I went to pull the vines this weekend, three weeks into February!

Your Happy Meal Will Self Destruct In 30 Minutes!

It puts a whole new meaning on fast food.  I guess if you weren't in a hurry you would have gone to a real restaurant.

Koch Brothers Funded Wisconsin Governor

From The Raw Story

Who was the principle financiers of Wisconsin's Republican Governor, now embroiled in a controversial attempt to destroy public sector unions?
None other than reviled tea party financiers Charles and David Koch, is who.
Turns out, the billionaire oil tycoons' political action committee gave Gov. Scott Walker (R) roughly $100,000 in campaign contributions during the 2010 election, according to campaign finance records highlighted by Mother Jones.
The contributions came from the same source -- Koch Industries PAC -- and though through two channels which were both legal under current campaign finance law.

What's Up Wisconsin?

I applaud the working people of Wisconsin for not sitting on their bums when they are under attack.  The new Governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker walked into his office with over 100-million dollars in surplus.  He cut some deals with his buddies and now there is over 100-million owed by the state.  He wants to take this from the public workers unions without bargaining.  These unions signed legal contracts and Walker wants to break them.  To do this with about 5 days notice and without  coming back to the table with the unions to see what can be done to make things work has sent state senators to flee over state lines.  If they aren't in the capital to vote on this, it can't be enacted.  There are only 19 republicans and they need 20 people to make a quorum..
People have been marching by the 10's of thousands in freezing temperatures all over the state to protest this taking of peoples rights.  The protests started on Monday and grew larger by Thursday night with no sign of going away.
The movement is growing and Ohio and Indiana are getting in on the act as those states have also elected leaders that are proposing similar legislation.
The whole thing about Wisconsin is that it didn't need to happen.  They entered into the new Walker administration with a budget surplus.  This is all out war against working people.  Thanks Wisconsin for showing us what America looks like when we are being turned into surfs.  You guys haven't given up, the rest of us should take notice.

Electrical Déjà Vu?

I guess if it was good enough for Enron to do to California, it was good enough for Texas.
We got an actor for a governor and a massive debt, I wonder what lies ahead for Texas?  Didn't they read the news?

A report released Monday concludes that electric deregulation has cost Texas residential consumers more than $11 billion in higher rates and that the operator of the state's major power grid, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, has been poorly managed and industry-dominated

"Why Does Clarence Thomas Get Away With Breaking the Law, As His Wife Shills for Wealthy Right-Wingers?"

From Brad Friedman at The Brad Blog:

Picking up on The BRAD BLOG's coverage last week, offering new and exclusive details on Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas' 20 years of financial disclosure crimes, and the specific legal penalties --- including jail time --- that he ought to be very worried about (if accountability was ever appropriately brought to folks on the Right) Nancy Goldstein at Alternet today quotes me in her new article asking "Why Does Clarence Thomas Get Away With Breaking the Law, As His Wife Shills for Wealthy Right-Wingers?"
I'm quoted at the beginning of her report, as follows...
More ( Today the Brad Blog at www.bradblog.com/ has been taken down.)  He said last night on the Mike Malloy show while interviewing cartoonist Tom Tomorrow that he was the subject of attack by the US Chamber of Commerce for his contributions to the story.  Today his blog is off line. Coincidence?
Here is a link to the Alternet story that still works.
Here is a related story

UPDATE From Brad Friedman:

Following last night’s show, the BradBlog.com server was knocked off line. At this time, I’m not certain of the cause, and having trouble getting information from my server adminstrator.
While the incident occurred following my coverage, on last night’s show, of the group of “security firms” working to put together a plan for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to attack both my non-profit organizations — which I had written about as well last night — and then the revelation that they were also targeting me and my family personally (both as covered last night by ThinkProgress), I don’t yet know if any of that has anything to do with this fairly unprecedented outage or not.
Working to figure that out. I am fine, however, and if need be, as I finish my week guest hosting Mike’s show tonight, we can run the chat room etc. here at the MikeMalloy.com server (thanks to Mike’s server admin folks 921!)
So, more details as I’m able to figure it all out. Check back at this space for more details if  The BRAD BLOG is still down for the short term. And my thanks to all of those who have sent email, tweets and other messages of support!
Brad
UPDATE 1:28pm PT: Journalist David Dayen of Firedoglake has just covered this story with an article based on an interview he did with me this afternoon, pointing out why shedding sunlight on the way these creeps operate is so important (and how the corporate media has, so far, failed to do a damned thing about it.)

URGENT--Dire need for community solidarity!!!

From the Trinidad Skatepark Alliance blog
Hello All,

For those who attended the event Saturday night, good times were had indeed.  BUT, they came at a cost, as we in this small, quiet town anticipated.  Unfortunately, the wrath has been thrust at our hard-working, beloved City Clerk, Gabe Adams, who had no idea how BIG things were going to get.  He is asking for our help.  Please, join us at the City Council meeting this Wednesday night, 02/09, at Trinidad Town Hall, at 6:30 to show our solidarity for Gabe, for our community, and for our right to raise our collective voice.  You do not have to speak.  Your mere presence will speak for you.

Keith Olberman To Join Al Gore's Current TV Channel?

Former MSNBC Anchor Keith Olberman is going to make an announcement tomorrow about his new media venture.  Olberman abruptly left MSNBC last month as the number one rated show on that cable TV channel.

The New York Times has some ideas about what will be announced tomorrow.

Sources say he will join with Al Gore's cable channel, Current TV.

Reagan helped create the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden and 9 other things the Right doesn't want you to know.

If he were still alive, today would be President Ronald Regan's 100th birthday.  Happy Birthday Regan!  With that said, if you worship this man as many in this country do, consider his legacy.  I saw a t-shirt with his picture and the caption "The Anti Obama"  There is some truth to that statement.

ThinkProgress did a good job of pointing out how un-conservative he truly was.

A benefit for the Trinidad Skate Park Alliance had some fantastic entertainment for the residents of what is sometimes called a tiny drinking village with a fishing problem.

Woven Roots capped the night off with their cool mountian reggae style but the night started with fine arts performed by Humboldt Spin Collective, Arial Circus Arts and pyrotechnics from The Mischief Lab.

People say that alternative energy transportation isn't perfected yet.  While this may be true for the most part, some people are doing it anyway.  You could say this guy is all wet but you can't deny that he is using alternative energy for one hell of a ride!

This was taken today at Clam Beach Ca.

Scientists Suggest The World Raise Beef The Humboldt Way

New Report Recommends Ways to Lower Global Warming Emissions from U.S. Beef Production
Pasture-Fed Beef Has Significant Advantages over CAFOs

WASHINGTON - February 2 - U.S. beef cattle are responsible for 160 million metric tons of global warming emissions every year -- equivalent to the annual emissions from 24 million cars and light trucks. But unlike American drivers, farmers who raise beef on pasture can reduce global warming emissions by storing, or sequestering, carbon in pasture soils, according to a report released today by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS).

“Given the threat that climate change poses, all sectors of our economy – including agriculture -- have to do their part,” said UCS Senior Scientist Doug Gurian-Sherman, the author of the report. “There is a range of affordable ways beef producers, especially those who raise beef on pasture, can significantly reduce their impact by cutting emissions and capturing more carbon in soil.”

See the rest of the report from the Union of Concerned Scientists.                         Humboldt Grassfed Beef
The report suggest that the rest of the world follow the model we have here in Humboldt County California. See the link for Humboldt Grassfed Beef and compare it to the report. I love the fact that I can get Humboldt Grassfed Beef in the store a mile from my house.

This model preserves open space, is better for emissions and is actually healthier for those that consume it compared to beef that is so called finished on a feed lot. Many choose not to eat animals and that is their choice. Those of us that do, should try to make the best choices we can for our own health and that of the planet.
