More Arrests At Occupy Eureka

Below is a release I got from P.A.R.C. tonight. Caution, the font gets pretty big.

In the latest show of complete lawlessness and blatant disregard for the Constitutional Rights of the Citizens of Humboldt County, the Eureka Police Department has once again raided the Occupy Eureka site and stolen both the Information Booth and the Scott Olsen Social Center. In addition to this robbery, they have also kidnapped 2 of our Comrades - Kimberly Starr and Stanton Woods are now being held in the Humboldt County Jail despite the fact that they were doing nothing other than exercising their First Amendment Right to speak and hand out literature in a public place. The EPD is trying to claim that Kim Starr was in violation of a court order when she handed out fliers. At the court proceedings to which the EPD were referring, Judge Cissna EXPLICITLY, on the record, said that she was free to speak and hand out papers on the sidewalk. They claim that she further violated orders by erecting the Scott Olsen Center (which was not blocking the sidewalk or in any other way impeding foot traffic and was only there to protect the information table from the weather and as a gathering place for Occupiers and conversations) even though she never even touched any part of it.

DEMAND THE RELEASE OF KIM STARR AND STANTON WOODS. Don't allow the Paul Gallegos and the Humboldt County Jail to keep these activists locked up. Remind them that Penal Code 825 requires them to bring Kim and Stan in front of a judge (for arraignment) "without unnecessary delay, and, in any event, within 48 hours after his or her arrest."

DEMAND THE RETURN OF OUR STOLEN LITERATURE, BANNERS, AND SUPPLIES!!

Senate Bill Would Allow US Military To Police Your Town And Indefinite Detention

From the ACLU

Senators need to hear from you, on whether you think your front yard is part of a “battlefield” and if any president can send the military anywhere in the world to imprison civilians without charge or trial.

The Senate is going to vote on whether Congress will give this president—and every future president — the power to order the military to pick up and imprison without charge or trial civilians anywhere in the world. Even Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) raised his concerns about the NDAA detention provisions during last night’s Republican debate. The power is so broad that even U.S. citizens could be swept up by the military and the military could be used far from any battlefield, even within the United States itself.

The worldwide indefinite detention without charge or trial provision is in S. 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act bill, which will be on the Senate floor on Monday. The bill was drafted in secret by Sens. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) and passed in a closed-door committee meeting, without even a single hearing.

The senators pushing the indefinite detention proposal have made their goals very clear that they want an okay for a worldwide military battlefield, that even extends to your hometown. That is an extreme position that will forever change our country.
Now is the time to stop this bad idea. Please urge your senators to vote YES on the Udall Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act.

Foreclosed Homeowners Re-Occupy Their Homes

By Zaineb Mohammed

Excerpt from story:
SAN FRANCISCO – Carolyn Gage was evicted from her foreclosed home in January. Earlier this month, she moved back in.
When Gage initially left about 10 months ago, she took some personal items with her, but left most of the furniture and continued paying for some utilities.
“It didn’t feel right for me to move. I just left my things because I knew I was going to return to them eventually,” she said.
She had to re-activate a few utilities when she returned, like the water, but found the process fairly easy.
Walking back into the house was an emotional moment for Gage, but a joyous one.

The Blessing Of The Fleet -Happy Thanksgiving

http://youtu.be/zlpl6wFphTU
Above is video of a native prayer at this mornings blessing of the fleet in Trinidad.

Below is my turkey.  I had to wake up at 4 am to put it into the smoker.  The recipe involves apples, onions, pepper, season salt, garlic, butter and cola.  I used throwback Pepsi because I didn't want HFCS and the throwback stuff has real sugar.  You can also use the Mexican versions of coke etc.  The recipe calls for pecan on the smoke and I have never smoked anything with pecan nor have I ever used a cola in a recipe. It smells great and is just about 2 or 3 hours away from being dinner.

Big Red Feast

Every year that I have worked at the radio station, Rollin at Big Red down the hall cooks a turkey.  It has become a day before Thanksgiving tradition of sorts around here.  He sometimes will deep fry the bird and other years he smokes it. The only lousy one was when he tried to microwave one a few years ago.

This year, JB and Rollin got together and fried and smoked a turkey and even fried some pork and beef.  JB made some pies and it was a feast in studio C.

Open Letter from Occupy Eureka to Humboldt Supes and Eureka City Council

To: Members of the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors
Members of the Eureka City Council

Date: November 18, 2011

... Re: Protests in Humboldt County and the City of Eureka

Greetings. As the elected mediator for Occupy Eureka, I am submitting this letter to notify you that the members of Occupy Eureka, by vote at their November 16, 2011 and November 17, 2011 General Assemblies, have asked me to respectfully request that the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors (the “County”) and the Eureka City Council (the “City”) publicly discuss and respond to the following requests for discussion and action regarding the ongoing Occupy Eureka protest and the fencing (the “Fencing”) currently in place on the Humboldt County Courthouse lawn (the “Lawn”). In addition, I have been asked to write this letter with the hope that the rules and regulations regarding future protests and other items specifically outlined be examined, clarified, discussed and revised as needed.

Specifically, the items for which examination, clarification, public discussion and revision are requested are as follows:
1. Whether the Fencing can be removed.
2. Whether the City or the Board has any objection to a 24/7 presence on the Lawn for the purpose of peaceful protesting and exercise of Constitutional rights and, if so, why.
3. Whether camping on the Lawn may be allowed for protestors and, if not, why.
4. Whether camping on the Lawn may be allowed for those who do not have homes and, if not, what options the City and County have in place for those who do not have housing and whether or not those provisions, if any, are adequate.
5. What are the rules currently in place applicable to protests in the City and County?
6. What are the rules currently in place in the City and County regarding camping in their respective jurisdictions?
7. What are the existing policies or directives of the City and County regarding how their respective law enforcement agencies are asked to handle alleged violations of law by protestors in their respective jurisdictions?
8. Are there any restrictions regarding the use of, or policies supporting the confiscation of, educational materials, and any structure erected to protect same against the elements at any protest within the jurisdiction of either the City or County?
9. What restrictions exist regarding the distribution and/or consumption of food, and any structure erected to protect same against the elements, at any protest within the jurisdiction of either the City or County.
10. Are there any existing requirements for the engagement in a protest, including any permit that may be required and the process for obtaining same?
11. Are there any existing requirements for the distribution of food to the needy in either the City or County?
12. Whether the City and/or County will grant permission to Occupy Eureka to hold an event on Thanksgiving Day to provide food and support to those in need.
13. Whether the City and County can direct the appropriate law enforcement agencies in their jurisdictions to provide an itemized list of those items confiscated in the past month from protestors on the Lawn that identifies what items are available for release, which are not, and the reasons for any item not being returned as well as clarification of exactly how and when those items that may be retrieved will be accomplished.
14. Whether the City and the County will consider adopting an ordinance similar to that adopted in Santa Rosa regarding the allowance of camping at protests.
15. Whether it is possible to get public bathrooms in Humboldt County and/or a porta potty at the protest.

Please note that each request being made herein is being made individually. In other words, if there is some reason it is problematic to respond to any particular item, the request would be that the objection be stated and a discussion ensue regarding how the issue can be reframed to enable discussion, but that discussion continue on other issues. In addition, it would be appreciated if time could be reserved at any future public meeting to add other items that may have been inadvertently omitted.

Finally, it is respectfully requested that a public meeting be set with all due speed. It would be appreciated if an initial meeting could be arranged prior to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Please do not hesitate to contact the undersigned with any questions you may have or with specific requests regarding anything that can be done to speed this process along. Thank you so very much for your anticipated attention to these matters.

Respectfully Submitted,

Laura J. Cutler

Day Of Action Focused On Crumbling Infrastructure

Day Of Action Focused On Crumbling Infrastructure
On Thursday close to 300 communities will draw attention to the bad bridges, roads, and other crumbling infrastructure and to put it into their words:

In big cities, suburbs, and small towns, we are declaring an economic emergency at the very places that can put America back to work: our crumbling bridges, understaffed schools, and other sites that represent a failed economy.

Private Prison Charges Inmates $5 A Minute For Phone Calls While They Work For $1 A Day

By Amanda Peterson Beadle posted from ThinkProgress Justice on Nov 16, 2011 at 8:00 pm

http://www.nationofchange.org/
Last year the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), the nation’s largest private prison company, received $74 million of taxpayers’ money to run immigration detention centers. Their largest facility in Lumpkin, Georgia, receives $200 a night for each of the 2,000 detainees it holds, and rakes in yearly profits between $35 million and $50 million.
Prisoners held in this remote facility depend on the prison’s phones to communicate with their lawyers and loved ones. Exploiting inmates’ need, CCA charges detainees here $5 per minute to make phone calls. Yet the prison only pays inmates who work at the facility $1 a day. At that rate, it would take five days to pay for just one minute.
See video and read more

For those that say that the private sector can do things better let this be a lesson.  They don't know how to pick a phone company.  Forget magic jack and vonage, even AT&T could  save you 75 to 90 percent on those calls. They would even throw in free cell phones (pun intended) and make a killing.

A Challenge To Eureka Police Chief Harpham

From his facebook Mark Sailors said:
Yesterday on KMUD police Chief Harpham claimed no batons were used during the raid on the Occupy Eureka protesters, and claimed he would pay 1000 dollars out of his own pocket for proof. The video footage I submitted to KIEM news clearly shows police using a baton on a protester, and the accompanying still photo clearly show the Chief standing over the scene.
The supposed incident takes place in the first minute of the video.  The larger the screen, the easier it is to see. Watch for yourself at the link below.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkNt2zE3qJA

Mark Sailors told me on the radio that he doesn't like being called a liar, and who does?  I think Mr. Sailors is correct about the video, what do you think?  Does Chief Harpham owe Mark 1,000 dollars?

B of A Making Money Off The Unemployed

Excerpt from Think Progress
Late last month, a national backlash forced Bank of America to abandon its plan to charge customers $5 a month to use their debit cards. But Huffington Post reports that the corporation has quietly been mining other sources of fees, preying on its most vulnerable customers to rake in millions in revenue:

Shawana Busby does not seem like the sort of customer who would be at the center of a major bank’s business plan. Out of work for much of the last three years, she depends upon a $264-a-week unemployment check from the state of South Carolina. But the state has contracted with Bank of America to administer its unemployment benefits, and Busby has frequently found herself incurring bank fees to get her money.

To withdraw her benefits, Busby, 33, uses a Bank of America prepaid debit card on which the state deposits her funds…Busby visits the ATMs in her area and begrudgingly accepts the fees, which reach as high as five dollars per transaction. She estimates that she has paid at least $350 in fees to tap her unemployment benefits. [...]

Local Tea Party Takes On Occupy Eureka

Thanks to John for sharing this on his facebook.  It is a letter to the Humboldt Tea Party Patriots.

ATTENTION ALL HTPP MEMBERS;
As most of you know, there has been an ongoing demonstration at the Humboldt
County Court House by a group calling itself “Occupy Humboldt”. They have been
... breaking county and city ordinances in regards to unlawful camping, urinating on
building walls and defecating at the entrances of businesses. They have been
removed by police from the court house lawn, only to return, tearing down
temporary fences erected by the County to protect the grounds and are illegally
camping again as of this writing. They have also tried to wrest the microphone
from a member of the news media while being asked questions. On the 11th of
November, Veteran’s Day, they hauled down the American flag flying at the Court
House. There have also been death threats to some members of the news media.
So far, the Humboldt County and Eureka City governments have done very little to
uphold local ordinances. They took an oath to uphold the California State and
U.S. Government Constitutions. To do nothing only shows a weakness on the part
of the governing body which emboldens the law breaker.
I invite you to join us at the Humboldt County Supervisor’s meeting at the County
Court House on November 15th to participate in the public comment period at
1:30 P.M. and the public comment period which is held shortly after the start of
the Eureka City Council meeting beginning at 6 P.M., also on the 15th, at Eureka
City Hall located at 6th and K Streets. Even if you do not want to verbalize, your
presence would be appreciated. If you can’t make the afternoon meeting
because of work commitments, you have another chance in the evening.
This is your County and City. We cannot allow lawlessness to rule. See you on the
15th!! Encourage your Veteran friends and members of other patriotic
organizations to also participate. Insist on protecting our rights as law abiding
and tax paying citizens.

600 Police Officers Take Down Tents In Oakland - 50 Police Officers Take Down Tents Eureka Ca.

Oakland Mayor's top legal aid resigned last night and joined the Occupy Oakland movement. This morning, 600 officers were used to take down some tents.

In Northern California, Eureka used some 50 officers to remove about a dozen tents and people that were in them this morning according to reports. Lost Coast Outpost has good coverage today.

SF Gate had this:
(11-14) 09:47 PST EUREKA -- Police in Eureka arrested 31 adults and one juvenile early this morning when they cleared out the Occupy Eureka camp for the second time in as many weeks.
The early morning raid on camp outside of the Humboldt County Courthouse was largely peaceful, except for one person who threw a chunk of asphalt at police, said Eureka police Sgt. Stephen Watson.
Police arrested 13 people when they cleared out the camp early last week, but many of the protesters returned as soon as they were released, Watson said.
"That time was more of a warning," he said. "This time around the department went with, well, a little more stern disposition."
But protesters said they didn't get a warning and were roughed up by police.
"Pain compliance techniques, including the use of nunchaku-like devices, were used on non-violent, cooperative demonstrators and their cries for help could be heard from across the street," according to an e-mail from the Occupy Eureka group.
Police walked the 32 arrested people around the corner to the county jail, which is part of the courthouse. They will be held until they post bail, Watson said.
The district attorney has agreed to prosecute participants for unlawful lodging and other charges, Watson said. Confiscated tents and other supplies will likely be held as evidence until court proceedings are complete.
County officials will probably erect a semi-permanent fence around the courthouse lawn to keep protesters from returning, he said.
"We had a lot of complaints from residents, from businesses and from the county," he said.

The North Coast Journal has before and after pictures.

Occupy Eureka Back By Popular Demand

After 13 people were arrested at Occupy Eureka this morning and all of their camping gear was dumped in Coopers Gulch, they came back.  The 13 got out of jail and the orange plastic fence put around the grassy area of the Humboldt County Court House was pulled up and deposited in front of the glass doors of the 5th St. entrance to the court.

The crowd which grew from being joined by the 2 Arcata Occupy groups was a bit rowdy tonight and even blocked traffic once to the point that someone almost got run over.  The Eureka Police came after that and about a dozen of them held up on two corners across the street.

Andrew Goff of the North Coast Journal has been tweeting and said in one tweet:

Chinook

Driving by the airport in McKinleyville today I saw a Boeing CH-series Chinook helicopter doing maneuvers over the tarmac.  Sometimes they just hovered in place and then slowly forward and backwards.  They never went above about 50 or 60 feet while I was watching them.  I have always been fascinated by these helicopters because of the double rotor design.

I can't say who was operating the helicopter but maybe the Coast Guard, which has a station at the airport, was taking it for a test drive.  Logging companies also use these helicopters because they have the ability to lift up to 28-thousand pounds and can go where no truck can go.

County Wants Eureka Police To Take Down Occupy Eureka At Court House

This just in:

Right now, Occupy Eureka is in their nightly General Assembly. Linda Atkins of the Eureka City Council, just informed the people gathered for the assembly that the County govt. has been complaining to the Eureka City govt. about the Occupy demonstration (on the lawn of the Courthouse/Jail). The County has been requesting that the Eureka Police Department come raid, or break up, the demonstration. Linda Atkins told the General Assembly that she thinks that it is imminent- the EPD coming to shut down the demonstration.

Please come down to the courthouse tonight whenever you can. If you have a camera, great, bring it. Bring warm clothes so you can stay a while. Bring anything warm you can spare and SPREAD THE WORD. Carpool to the courthouse. Occupy Eureka is bustling every day with people talking about the Occupy movement and the problems of capitalism, inequality, and endless destruction of all things good- that have led to this movement. Nighttime is scarcer at Occupy Eureka, and it could use your presence.

Linda said she didn't know that it would be tonight but SOON. Please come out and make EPD reconsider breaking up the most visible Occupy demonstration in the County. Occupy Eureka has been set up for 26 days and nights.

Please support your local Occupy.

Our Motto " In God We Trust"

Our motto " In God We Trust"
Image From Butterfunk.com
In these times of high unemployment and crumbling infrastructure, the US House of Representatives spent much of the day reaffirming that as a country our motto is not E Pluribus Unum but In God We Trust.
Instead of figuring out what to do about fixing the problems of our country, they went for a make over with a new motto.
The next time some child is a casualty of a drone strike on her dad, because he is deemed a terrorist by our president, just remember our motto " In God We Trust". It's not really our president that does these things for he is just trusting in god to do the right thing, what ever that is? When someone scores a hit of smack or wants to buy sex, In God We Trust is our motto and is on the money exchanged for it. For some reason, call it communist hysteria in the 1950's, congress added " one nation under god" to the Pledge of Allegiance. At the same time they put gods name on our money. God is now involved with the money changers, banksters, gangsters, drug dealers, prostitutes, murder for hire and all other filth done in the name of the almighty dollar!
I wonder how god feels about all of this? His son said sell everything and follow me. When asked about taxes he said " who's face is on the coin?" Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and give to God what is God's. Why does congress want us to equate wealth with god?
Why put it on the money? Because money has become their new god.
