Radiation Levels Still High In Eureka Ca.

Elevated levels of background radiation have been measured here in Eureka Ca. since late last year. This elevation seems to have coincided with the recent steam release at the damaged Fukushima Diachi Power Plant in Japan. Reports say that heavy rains caused water to enter the reactor that turned to steam.

There are 5 levels on this chart and we have been at level 5 (5 being the worst) for days now.
Here is a link to the monitoring site. http://www.netc.com/

Update: Eureka just (as of 4:30 pm today) dropped to Radcon 3 level for the first time in days. I hope this means better readings going forward.

    1. That site says a reading up to 16 is a standard reading, not a normal level of radiation.

  2. Anonymous, I'll go with your map because it looks safer. However one problem is that the site says that the Eureka reading is actually 3 times higher than normal background levels and since it says 27 and normal is 15 that would seem to be impossible.

    Here is what it says:
*Readings not Equalized means the Monitoring Stations are broadcasting the raw radiation count from their Geiger counters, without adjustment for different count rates existing between various Geiger counter designs. For instance, models built around a "Pancake" (see Map Legend) style of Geiger-Mueller tube typically have about a 3 times count rate over Standard tubed models, so their readings in CPM would be expected to average about 3 times higher, anyway.

Maybe someone else can help me figure this out.

  3. Interestingly, Fukushima reactor 3 shows as normal "RADCON 1"

  5. I saw that Anonymous. The winds blow away from the plant out to sea and away from Fukushima most of the time. Notice that we are at Radcon 4 again today on Saturday. The whole south west looks bad this morning.

  6. Today we dropped to a Radcon 2 so that is good since there is mist and fog in the forecast.

  7. Interesting enough, cpm foe energy ranges associated with fission products like from a reactor or rad waste was higher before Fukushima then it is lately. It commonly hit 300+ back in January 2011.

  9. While you all have something blowing around there, it would be premature without further investigation to say it's all coming from Fukushima.
