Disrespect or Ignorance?

Learning that U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy died overnight, I was looking for flags today. I don't know if the private sector is just ignorant or disrespectful. The only building that I saw with a flag at half mast was the county building next door to the radio station I work at.

All the private sector flags I saw didn't get it right.

  1. Private businesses aren't required to lower the flag if they don't want to.

"As a mark of respect for the memory of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States of America, that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on August 30, 2009."

That was the Presidential Proclamation issued by Barack Obama.

It doesn't effect the Job Market or McDonalds.
I did lower mine out of respect.

Edward Kennedy was the opposite of Ronald Regan on almost every policy issue.

  2. Today, Pierson's the store with the big hammer, had it's flag at half staff. Right on!

  3. I am happy to say that McDonalds lowered their flag today and Carl's Jr. can't because their flag poll is too short and too close to the drive thru. It would hit cars as they went through. That's understandable.

  4. Arkley Center wouldn't never lower their flag for a Kennedy

  5. I checked the City Hall and the Fireman's Hall in Rio Dell on my daily trip to work and I am not sure about the actual day of but the certainly did not have their flags lowered on any of the past few days that it was required by the Executive Order. I had considered calling them and asking them why they chose to ignore this or if it was ignorance of it but I was not 100% sure of the end date. Maybe our public works office is not public after all!

  6. Rio Dell, "we don't need no stinking executive order" Unless it's a republican.

To be fair to the Arkley center in the photograph, after further examination, it looks like those flags are not raised and lowered daily. I think they are lighted and remain until they need to be replaced. If anyone knows different, please chime in.
I'm willing to cut anyone some slack. I wonder what the story in Rio Dell is? Could I be right? Are they purely partisan?
