Westhaven Blackberry Festival Goes Until 6 pm tonight!

Today's Blackberry Festival in Westhaven goes till 6 pm not 3 pm as advertised.

A Fishable Minus Tide Means Clam Fishing

There was a favorable low tide this morning for Razor Clam digging. 

About 100 people scattered Clam Beach from near the camp ground to Little River carrying clam shovels and sacks.  Other than that, a fishing license is about all you need.

Westhaven Blackberry Festival Today

Join neighbors and friends at the 51st Annual Westhaven Blackberry Festival on Sunday, July 31 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Westhaven Fire Hall on Sixth Avenue.
Sales of fresh blackberry pies, jams, barbecued hamburgers and beverages benefit the Westhaven Volunteer Fire Department. There will be music, booths and goodwill in abundance. No pets, please.
WCA will sponsor a Flea Market on Blackberry Festival day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Bring your own attic, closet, cupboard and garage finds and your table and set up on WCA grounds on Westhaven Drive near Sixth Avenue. Ten percent of your sale proceeds will go to WCA.

The End Of An Era, 101 True Value Hardware In Trinidad Closing

The local True Value Hardware store at 400 Patricks Point Drive in Trinidad Ca. is closing it's doors.  The family owned business started 22 years ago and was a convenient location for those between Orick and McKinleyville needing anything from 2x4's to paint and plumbing.  The owner of the store passed away in 2008 and it took over two years for his stock to be transferred to his surviving family. The transfer had to take place before they could put it up for sale.  A sale fell through so as of Wednesday, the store is liquidating everything at half off until it all is gone. 

The closest hardware store for the folks in Trinidad will now be McKinleyville Ace Home and Garden Center which is roughly 10 miles to the south of town.

Arcata Pot Grow Leads To House Fire or Vise Versa

HOUSE FIRE LEADS TO THE DISCOVERY OF AN ILLEGAL MARIJUANA GROW

On July 27th, 2011, officers from the Arcata Police Department responded to the 1700 Blk of Iverson Ave for the report of a structure fire. The officers were alerted by fire personnel that the orgin of the fire appeared to be associated with a large marijuana grow inside the home.

Based on this information, the residence was secured and a search warrant was obtained.

Upon the service of the search warrant, officers discovered a sophisticated indoor marijuana cultivation operation inside the home and in a detached garage.

Nearly 800 growing marijuana plants, 80 pounds of dried marijuana in various stages of processing, 3 firearms and nearly $2000 in cash were discovered and seized.

Twenty-eight year old Sonja Marie Bush of Arcata and thirty-four year old Darren Joseph Weeth of Arcata were arrested and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility for cultivation of marijuana and cultivation of marijuana for sales.

City of Arcata building inspectors discovered numerous building code violations at the Samoa Blvd location, necessitating the immediate disconnection of electrical service.

Pot Grow Busted By Landlord Looking For Rent

So a guy is getting stiffed for rent and goes to collect and all he finds are a bunch of vegetables and holes in his house.

On 7/28/11, at about 2:30 PM, Investigators with the Eureka Police Department’s Problem Oriented Policing Unit (POP) executed a search warrant at a residence on the 2500 block of Garland Street, Eureka. The warrant was obtained after the landlord reported finding an active marijuana grow in the residence during a visit there due to his tenants not paying their rent.

No one was home at the time the warrant was served. Investigators located and seized 32 maturing marijuana plants, approximately 3’ – 4’ in height in one bedroom and 34 small starter plants in an adjoining bathroom. (66 plants in total). In a second bedroom, investigators found pots for approximately 66 more plants that had been recently harvested.

Additionally, several hazards associated with the illegal grow were identified. The growers had cut holes through load bearing walls, floors, and ceilings for ventilation, electrical wiring, and watering. Several exterior doors and windows were boarded up, creating additional fire escape hazards. Officials with the Building, Community Development, and Eureka Fire Departments responded to the scene to assist. Due to the fire hazard from illegal wiring to power multiple grow lights and fans, the power meter was pulled.

The grow was determined to be well outside the provisions of Eureka’s Medical cannabis Ordinance. Additionally, no valid Proposition 215 notices were posted or located in the residence.

Evidence pertaining to the suspects’ identities was found inside the residence. The investigation is continuing and impending arrests are anticipated.

Crab Season Coming To An End

The Humboldt Crabs have played their last home game for the 2011 season.  They will play in Redding over the weekend for 3 games against the Colt 45's and then come back home for at least two games in the Far West League Playoffs Thursday and Friday. They could play Saturday and Sunday if they win.  These games require a special ticket and season tickets are not good for the final tournament.

Crabs beat the Mudcats 4-2 in the second game of tonights double header.  I don't know who won the first game.

Black Oak Ranch And Electric On The Eel

Earthdance has moved from Black Oak Ranch near Laytonville Ca. to Vallejo this year.
I was reminiscing  the Hog Farm that used to take place there. I worked many an event just to get in for free.  This year there was no Reggae Rising which is where the concerts at Black Oak Ranch started.  Reggae on the River moved to Benbow a few years ago and seems to be doing well there.  I usually go to Earthdance but this year I will give a pass.  I will instead go to a new festival at Black Oak Ranch, The Gaia Festival, August 5th. through the 7th.

It all started 24 years ago when Wavy Gravy asked Jerry Garcia if he would do a concert to raise funds to help with the mortgage payments at Black Oak Ranch. Jerry said if you can get Bill Graham to co-produce the show with you I’ll do it. So Wavy asked Bill and “Electric on the Eel” was born. 1987 was the year that Jerry decided to take his acoustic/electric show to Broadway, so Jerry used the Electric on the Eel show as his springboard to the Big Apple. Bringing in David Nelson, Sandy Rothman, & John Kahn for the acoustic set while having his Jerry Garcia Band for the electric set ended up being the same line up that eventually made it’s way to New York in October. Who would have guessed that this groundbreaking show on Broadway would find it’s start at French’s Camp in Southern Humboldt County with Wavy Gravy as MC. Four more years at French’s Camp, with Jerry performing every other year, made up the 5 year run for Electric On The Eel. Hot Tuna, Commander Cody, Ry Cooder & David Lindley rounded out the performances there, bringing an eclectic mix to the home of Reggae on the River.

1992 found the Hog Farm going home to Black Oak Ranch for the first festival there, Electric Off The Eel. Country Joe McDonald, Clan Dyken, Zero, Pele Juju, and Rod Deal & the Ideals were some of the performers that weekend. Next up, 1993 saw the beginning of the Hog Farm’s Rock N Roll Pignic. The Pignic was to continue on at Black Oak Ranch throughout the 90’s and into the new millennium, having it’s last festival in 2001. Over the years we saw many performers including Jackson Browne, Ben Harper, Mickey Hart & Planet Drum, String Cheese Incident, Ratdog, Leftover Salmon, Los Lobos, David Crosby, Warren Zevon, Ani DiFranco, Taj Mahal, JJ Cale, Richie Havens, Spearhead, Ozomatli, Galactic, Zap Mama, Hank Ballard & The Midnights, Baaba Maal, Richard Thompson, Steve Kimock, and many many more.

Vehicle Pursuit Leads To Crash And Injured EPD Officer

On 7-24-2011 at about 1:21 am, an Officer with the Eureka Police Department was on routine patrol in the area of Harris and Summer Street, when he observed a suspicious vehicle. The officer attempted a traffic enforcement stop on the vehicle for a vehicle code violation, but the vehicle fled. A pursuit was then initiated. The suspect vehicle led the officer at high speeds through residential Eureka and Pine Hill areas of town, before the officer lost sight of the vehicle.

The area was searched, with the assistance of other responding officers. The suspect vehicle was soon located near Higgins and Meyers Streets in Pine Hill. An enforcement stop was once again attempted, but the suspect vehicle fled thru Pine Hill. The pursuit continued to Herrick Avenue and then back into Eureka. The suspect vehicle again was traveling at a high rate of speed and had also turned its vehicle lights off. The suspect vehicle continued past the Eureka Municipal Golf Course and northbound on “F” Street, reaching speeds in excess of 70 mph. An attempt to deploy spike strips to stop the suspect vehicle was made on “F” Street, but was unsuccessful. The suspect vehicle began making sporadic sudden turns on surface streets in the south end of Eureka, before impacting into a Eureka Police patrol unit, who was in the vicinity assisting with the pursuit. The collision took place at Oak and F Streets.

The force of the impact spun the patrol unit out of control and into a nearby fence. The suspect vehicle careened into parked cars before coming to rest.

Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene, along with the California Highway Patrol.

As a result of the impact of the collision, the officer was pinned in the vehicle and had to be extricated. The officer was later treated and released for moderate injuries at St. Joseph Emergency Room.

The suspect, identified as Benjamin Owen Bussell (25 years old of Hoopa), was taken into custody on fresh charges and outstanding warrants. He was then transported to St. Joseph Hospital for treatment of major injuries.

Any information regarding this incident or resulting collision should be directed to the California Highway Patrol.

Fair To Moderate, Or A Mix Of Sun And Fog?

 We stopped for a couple of cold ones across from Indian Rock.

We launched at the inside beach near the pier in Trinidad.  You can park right on the sand near the boat launch.  You will need four wheel drive and park up close to the cliff because when the tide comes in, much of the beach goes away.

I saw seals and otters as well as lots of birds including gulls and pelicans.

The U.S. Federal Reserve gave out $16.1 trillion in emergency loans to U.S. and foreign financial institutions between Dec. 1, 2007 and July 21, 2010, according to figures produced by the government's first-ever audit of the central bank.

Last year, the gross domestic product of the entire U.S. economy was $14.5 trillion.
Of the $16.1 trillion loaned out, $3.08 trillion went to financial institutions in the U.K., Germany, Switzerland, France and Belgium, the Government Accountability Office's (GAO) analysis shows.

Thom Hartmann had a great idea today.  He said since congress gives the treasury the power to coin money, the treasury should just mint 3 platinum coins worth 1 trillion dollars each.  They then deposit these 3 trillion dollar coins with the fed.  We now don't have to raise the debt ceiling.  Also we don't owe interest on the 3 trillion since we didn't borrow it from the banksters.

After about 3 days of warm winter storm in July, the sun came out and started burning off the fog.  Trinidad Head was shrouded in a moving fog bank this morning.  Damn I love living here.

The Eureka Police Department Continues Crackdown on Impaired Drivers with DUI Checkpoint

Summertime DUI Campaign Continues in the City with Increased Enforcement & Awareness

The Eureka Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on July 20th from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m., within the city limits of Eureka. The department is continuing its efforts at lowering the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes locally with this DUI/Drivers License checkpoint. Personnel will be checking drivers to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as heightening awareness to the dangers of impaired driving.

The summer months are a dangerous time of the year and your odds of being involved in an alcohol involved collision can be high. In 2009 law enforcement statewide reported that 6,871 people were injured or killed in alcohol involved collisions during the three summer months of June, July and August.

A major component of the checkpoints, beyond taking dangerous drivers off the road, is to increase awareness of the consequences of impaired driving and to encourage using sober designated drivers. A DUI checkpoint is a proven effective method for achieving this goal. By publicizing these enforcement and education efforts, the Eureka Police Department believes motorists are deterred from drinking and driving.

Law Enforcement encourages everyone to Report Drunk Drivers, Call 911! Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

July Rain

Overnight and early this morning we had some rain mixed with drizzle.  It was a warm drizzle that added up to about 2 tenths of an inch.  Not a lot by any standard but measurable none the less which is a bit rare here in the middle of July.

The wetness died down early though and didn't stop the Trinidad Artisan's Market from setting up. I read the latest issue of Savage Henry on Moonstone Beach with a breakfast burrito. 

Salmon season is on and in a big way, the ocean is calm and the fish are biting.  That brings a lot of boats to town.  This one parked in front of the Catch Cafe just made the sign more believable.

Judge halts CalTrans in Richardson's Grove State Park

A federal judge has stopped CalTrans from proceeding with the Highway 101 widening project through Richardson's Grove State Park until after the resolution of a December 1 hearing.

What's Up Wisconsin! And, McConnell Says Let Obama Raise Debt Limit

All 5 fake Democratic officials running in Wisconsin's recall election have lost and real Dem's have captured the Wisconsin State Senate seats that will swing power back to Democrats in the state that started the attack on unions and labor. It should be pointed out that there is still an election on August 8th, this was an unnecessary primary designed by Wisconsin Republicans to buy more time to take their state apart. That election will swing the power back to the democrats. 

  Democrats left the state when renegade Republicans took over the state and tried to undo over 50 years of workers rights.  They needed at least one Democrat to hold a vote.  Long story short, they hired a state supreme court judge to side with them on their agenda.

Look for the Governor, Scott Walker to be recalled next.  He wasn't eligible for recall until he has served for over a year.

Also, according to MSNBC, The top Republican in the Senate proposed on Tuesday giving President Barack Obama sweeping new power to, in effect, unilaterally increase the nation's debt limit to avoid a first-ever default on U.S.

The new mechanism would take the place of the current White House debt negotiations among congressional leaders and Obama. Those talks over spending cuts and tax increases have grown increasingly acrimonious.

Man Trying To Light Self On Fire Saved By APD Officer

MAN TRYING TO LIGHT SELF ON FIRE SAVED BY APD OFFICER
On July 8, 2011 at about 11:45 am, Officers from the Arcata Police Department responded to the 900 block of 6th Street on the report of an adult male subject pouring gasoline on himself and a building. The male had a lighter and was attempting to ignite the fuel.

 APD coordinated a multi-agency response which included personnel from the Arcata Fire Protection District and a request for assistance from Humboldt County Mental Health Services. Once on scene, APD Officers communicated with the male subject attempting to convince him not to ignite the fuel and prevent any further harm to himself.

As APD staff communicated with the male and waited the arrival of mental health personnel, the male became increasingly agitated and attempted to ignite the fuel.

Due of the immediate risk of severe injury or death to the male subject as well as a significant fire danger to the adjacent buildings, Officer Brian Hoffman of the Arcata Police Department sprang into action.

Without regard for his own personnel safety, Officer Hoffman quietly approached the male subject while other officers distracted him. Once Officer Hoffman was within range, he single-handedly disarmed the male of his lighter and detained him without injury to himself or the male subject.

The quick response from the Arcata Police Department, as well as the quick thinking and immense bravery of Officer Brian Hoffman and the other APD Officers, saved the man's life and prevented untold property damage.

As a precaution, the male subject was transported to the Mad River Hospital for evaluation.

● From 150 feet below the Lower Red Bluff (Sycamore) Boat Ramp to
Highway 113 bridge near Knights Landing, open July 16 through Dec. 18.
● From the Highway 113 bridge near Knights Landing to Carquinez
Bridge (includes Suisun Bay, Grizzly Bay and all tributary sloughs),
open July 16 through Dec. 11.
● All other areas and dates are closed to salmon fishing.

Klamath River

July 4th. UFO Over McKinleyville?

 If you have ever tried to capture pictures in the dark sky from a phone camera, you can imagine how hard it is to focus and snap a shot with any clarity.  These were taken on July fourth in McKinleyville.
I wouldn't have thought too much from the first report that took the pictures but I got another eye witness that said they saw the same thing and I found out they both live in McKinleyville. 

Granted, it was the fourth of July and there were many sky rockets.  Both parties told me that this came down above the approaching fog bank and went back up.  The second picture looks like a signal flare like they use on ships in distress.   You can see a trail behind it as it was going up at the time.  Problem is they both said it went up and down fast, without sound and did it more than once without touching the ground.   Also the top picture clearly shows 3 lights. 

Correction: The bottom picture was actually supposed to be sideways so the (what ever) was moving right to left in the photo, not up and down.  Also it would stop and pause for a while and then move again according to photographer.
Not sure what is  was but if anyone else saw it, please chime in and tell what you saw.

Staycation July 3rd. On The Little River and Moonstone Beach Ca.

 The upper Little River less than a mile inland from Moonstone Beach Ca.
 For best kayaking and canoe trips, launch from Moonstone Beach at  or just after high tide.  Head inland and come back as the tide is going back out.  This is a two mile round trip at most.

 This is what happens at low tide.  You have to drag back your kayak from the ocean.  At higher tides, one can ride back in on a wave.

 The mouth of Little River at Moonstone Beach at sunset. The waves in the ocean were so small that we went out into them from Little River at about an hour and a half after sunset. It made the walk back well worth it.

Directions: Take US 101 north of Arcata/Eureka Airport in McKinleyville Ca. past Clam Beach and up the hill about a mile past the Crannel exit to Westhaven Dr. exit and turn left under freeway to stop sign.  Turn left and go about 1 block on right to Moonstone Grill/ Turn right and go down the hill. Go past grill if you aren't hungry and the parking lot is at the bottom on the beach for easy access.
(not recommended for large RVs)

Another Reason Gas Is Cheaper In Montana

An Exxon Mobil pipeline that runs under the Yellowstone River in Montana ruptured Friday night and leaked for about a half-hour.

The New York Times reported that the town of Lauren, downstream from the rupture, had to be evacuated because officials feared a possible explosion.
Exxon said it had no information on the cause of the incident, which originated from a 12-inch pipeline that runs from Silver Tip to refineries in Billings.
The amount of oil that leaked is still being determined. The Billings Gazette reported that the company had dispatched local cleanup teams with absorbent pads to leach up oil from the riverbanks. Exxon's Global Response Team is being sent from Houston.

Sunday Crabs Game Canceled

I don't know yet why, but tomorrow's Humboldt Crabs Game has been canceled. These things happen.

Those that won tickets to the game on KGOE, KRED, KFMI or KKHB will have their choice of either tomorrow's game or Wednesday's game. Just go to the ticket booth and tell them that you were on Sunday's list and they will check the list and let you in.
