Last Week It Was Motorcyclists, This Week EPD Focus Is Roving DUI Checkpoints

To coincide with the Samoa All Bikes By The Bay celebration, the EPD announced they were having a motorcycle safety crack down last week.  They were about a month late for motorcycle safety month but what ever, they had to make good on some grant money that they got.

The Eureka Police Department Continues Crackdown on Impaired Drivers with DUI Checkpoint

Summertime DUI Campaign Continues in the City with Increased Enforcement & Awareness

The Eureka Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on July 20th from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m., within the city limits of Eureka. The department is continuing its efforts at lowering the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes locally with this DUI/Drivers License checkpoint. Personnel will be checking drivers to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as heightening awareness to the dangers of impaired driving.

The summer months are a dangerous time of the year and your odds of being involved in an alcohol involved collision can be high. In 2009 law enforcement statewide reported that 6,871 people were injured or killed in alcohol involved collisions during the three summer months of June, July and August.

A major component of the checkpoints, beyond taking dangerous drivers off the road, is to increase awareness of the consequences of impaired driving and to encourage using sober designated drivers. A DUI checkpoint is a proven effective method for achieving this goal. By publicizing these enforcement and education efforts, the Eureka Police Department believes motorists are deterred from drinking and driving.
