215 Friendly Houses For Rent Scam On Craigslist

A company calling themselves 215 Rentals is charging $20-dollars per listing for what they call 215 friendly houses for rent. They are doing business on Craigslist. The group is not licensed and is supposed to have a license to list houses for rent.  It turns out that the homes they are calling 215 friendly are not. Some of the owners of the properties for rent were contacted about being 215 friendly and they were unaware that their properties were being listed as so.

The web site for the scammers is http://www.betterbusiness.net/   Do not use this this web site to find rental properties. There are legitimate rental referral companies like The Rental Helpers that are licensed and offering properties in Humboldt Co. http://www.therentalhelpers.com/

If you have been scammed by 215 Friendly Rentals contact Misty Morgan, owner of The Rental Helpers at 707-443-4357. She will help you get in touch with the investigator of the Department of Real Estate.

Update: Ryan Burns of the North Coast Journal got the guy to call him.  You won't believe what he had to say about it.  http://www.northcoastjournal.com/blogthing/2011/08/09/depends-how-you-define-scam/

  3. Good looking out, but ANY site or listing service that charges a fee, including Rental Helpers, is a fraud.
There is no reason to pay someone for information that is already available for free, especially in our small communities.
The worst is when they advertise on CL and clog up the real listings.

  4. I'm very late, but thank you so much for you blog, Tom!

To anon above, here's the question:
What if you lived out of the area and needed to find a rental? What if you worked long hours and did not have time to do all the leg work required? What if you don’t like spending your time trying to figure out if a listing is a scam or if it’s real? What if you really wanted phone numbers instead of email addresses so you could actually call the landlords? What if you like getting updated properties (new one, not the ones repeatedly posted on Craigslist) send to your email instead of spending hours and time and gas tracking them down yourself?

The lists help a lot of people. Maybe the service just isn’t right for you, which is fine. It isn’t for everyone, but it’s great for those who do need it.

    All the best!
