Humboldt County Raises $1-Million Dollars In Effort To Attract Second Airline

Press Release:

EUREKA, CA) - The Redwood Region Economic Development Commission (RREDC) announced today that a giant step has been taken towards attracting more air service to the area — and bringing competition back to the Arcata Eureka Airport (ACV)— when a $1 million fundraising goal was reached today. The money will be used to support a new air carrier flying to a new hub airport until that route is self-supporting. RREDC and the County are now actively recruiting airlines and hope to have new service in place by spring 2013.
Photo from Humboldt.edu

“We all recognize that air service is a crucial link to the world for Humboldt County, just like the Internet and U.S. [highway] 101,” according to Don Ehnebuske, executive director of RREDC. “But like many people, we questioned why the community should raise funds to attract an airline to the area. After all, isn’t it their business to provide air service? However, when we started looking into it, we came to understand the huge payback for everyone in Humboldt County.”

Ticket prices shot up when Horizon ceased flights from ACV, leaving only one airline serving the area, and passengers began driving to other airports to take flights. Average one-way ticket prices to Los Angeles are now about $100 over the competitive fares of two years ago, costing the tens of thousands of passengers flying to LA millions of dollars a year. And there are about 50,000 fewer passengers flying from the airport every year, which dramatically reduces FAA construction funding available for local contractors and suppliers. The total loss to the community is at least $5 million per year by the most conservative estimates.

The $1 million raised came from the Department of Transportation, the Headwaters Fund and from over 70 local donors — businesses, tribes, individuals and local governments. The total local contribution was $250,000. That translates to at least $40 in reduced prices and construction jobs for every $1 invested by the community over the two-year agreement with a new airline.

Sights and Sounds of the Pacific, College Cove

A few weeks back when we had some great weather, I was exploring the trails above College Cove just north of Trinidad State Beach. I wanted to capture the sights and sounds more than the photos seemed capable of so I tried out the video function on my new camera. Enjoy a minute and 40 seconds of wobbly hand held video looking down at the beach. The sound from my little camera made me want a Corona beer.

Doubling Down On The Contrails

For what ever reason they are doubling down on the contrails over the Humboldt County skies today. A few moments ago I took these pictures just south of Eureka near Humboldt Hill. So much for Mr. Sun today.

High Water

Crannel Rd. near the Little River which dumps into the Pacific Ocean near Moonstone Beach.
A barn sits near the overflowing Mad River just west of U.S. 101.
An area of The Little River where it is overflowing it's banks into a cow pasture.
What is usually a small creek of a river, as it turns and goes under a private bridge just about a quarter mile before it dumps into the Pacific.

It was a really wet night with multiple road incidences all up and down the North Coast.

Traffic Hazard In Macktown, Right Lane Only Pretends To Be There

Drove into ditch on Tuesday morning.
When driving South on Central Avenue from Beau Pre Golf Course or the Eureka/Arcata Airport in McKinleyville Ca. you will pass a 76 gas station and Smug's Pizza on the right. It's just past Murray Road and the Renner Station.
If you are a good driver, you might be able to resist the ditch that pretends to be a part of the road. The road wants to be there but the county has left it open for the frogs or to save money from having to turn a small stream into a buried pipe and paved road.
Drove into ditch tonight, the next day.

At night it is almost impossible to see that the right lane is really a ditch. Wile turning right out of the driveway between Smug's Pizza and the 76 Gas station it is hard to see that there is a more than  3 food ditch to fall into. The ditch is not marked properly and at night with almost no light around, even I almost drove into the ditch of doom on a foggy night.
The right lane is a lie

A guy named Lloyd said that he saw another small car in the ditch about a month ago.
With the big rains on the way, don't you dare drown yourself in downtown Macktown!
I hope someone in the county or MCSD can figure out how to make this more safe.

Ok,  perhaps you could only drown if you were on your razor scooter and hit your head on the way in or if you were thrown from a plain white van by terrorists while bound and unable to climb out during the big winter storm. Still you will find it a bit hard to see in the fog or dark. Beware of that hole on the right that sucks you in. Stay left I say.

Some High Winds And Heavy Rains For Days

We are in for one heck of a week starting Wednesday. Expect some power outages.
Here's what the National Weather Service in Eureka is saying tonight at about 10:30 PM.

The first in a series of storms will impact the area late tonight into Wednesday. This will be a quick moving system bringing one half inch to 2 inches of rainfall with local amounts up to 3 inches in favored areas. Winds will gust 40 to 45 mph along the immediate coastal headlands and over ridges. Snow levels will be around 4500 feet over eastern Trinity county with several inches of snow possible above 5000 feet. A second system will bring stronger and potentially damaging winds to the coast on Thursday with another period of heavy rain. Localized urban and small stream flooding is possible as the front moves through. Yet another storm is projected to impact northwest California on Friday with more strong winds and heavy rain. Total rainfall amounts of 6 to 10 inches are expected through Sunday with localized amounts well over a foot in the King Range and over South Fork Mountain.

Dial Global and Cumulus Say Rush Limbaugh Hurt Radio Business

Rush Limbaugh, who's entertainment show airs on the Premiere Radio Networks has drawn the ire of two other radio network, Dial Global and Cumulus. Dial Global is the satellite distributor for progressive radio talk show hosts like Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann and Mike Malloy. Cumulus bought Citidel which included  ABC Radio, and stations like KGO in San Francisco.

Both networks are saying that advertisers left talk radio after Rush Limbaugh called Sandra Fluke a slut. Many advertisers said they just didn't want to be a part of talk radio at all after the caustic comedian took to his misogynistic and ignorant rants about Sandra Fluke and women in general. His ignorance of  how the female body works and constant rants on the subject cost the industry millions of dollars.

According to the Huffington Post, the rants have Dial Global removing themselves from the NASDQ Stock Exchange. This doesn't bode well for talk radio. The sad fact is that while Rush will stay on hundreds of stations because many of his advertisers don't care what he says about women and minorities, progressive talk show hosts may find themselves without a network. That would mean that stations like KGOE in Eureka could potentially end up having to find new programming. Yes, as odd as it seems, progressive talk radio designed to be an alternative to the racist and misogynistic rants of the right may be brought down by the very rants they were trying to be an alternative to.

Portland Loses Progressive Talk Station

What used to be the Flagship Thom Hartmann station in Oregon is switching its format from Progressive Talk to Sports.  10-Thousand watt powerhouse KPOJ AM is owned by Clear Channel which was acquired by Bain Capital in 2008.  KPOJ will now be a Fox Sports affiliate.

Stephanie Miller got moved to overnights in Detroit.

Radio host Mike Malloy said tonight on the air that we can expect to see more stations across the country make the change from Prog. Talk to Sports or what ever as the mega corporations do what they can to marginalize the progressive message. Malloy said the message wouldn't go away though, it will just move from terrestrial radio stations to online forums, pod casts and internet radio. He explained that this was already happening with i phones, droids and other newfangled stuff.

I can confirm that a couple of new sports networks are on the scene and they are going after stations hard to get them to change to their new ESPN alternative. I don't foresee a change at KGOE but you never know what lies ahead. If the programming is still available and we are still selling ads, we'll probable be around for a while.

Here is Bradblog's take on the story.

In-Home Supportive Services Workers Hold Candle Light Vigil

Tonight at the Humboldt County Courthouse, what looked like close to 100 people gathered for a candle light vigil to protest their low wages. In-home workers receive no overtime, or proper breaks, they have no health insurance and are paid minimum wage. Without these workers, many of our parents and grand parents would have to live in rest homes. The County Board of Supervisors refuses to give these workers a wage increase, they make $8.00 an hour and have to provide their own transportation, car, insurance and gas.

The elderly woman that owned this dog said that without her in-home care worker she would have to be in an old folks home and her dog would be put to sleep.

Workers and many of their supporters gathered to protest these injustices and then to head to a party at the CHUW office at 314 L Street Eureka.  The free event includes food and music from Joanne Rand.

Conservatives Gave Hundreds Of Millions Of Dollars To The Liberal Media

Photo from ywcneedham.blogspot.com
I was just pondering all of the money enabled by Citizens United  that went to conservative political PAC's during the campaign season. Literally hundreds of millions of dollars was just handed over to the so called "liberal media" to buy commercials and  influence the outcome of  the election to no avail.  Conservative judges enabled this outcome. Conservative political hacks were the ones that brought Citizens United to the Supreme Court in the first place. My question is, how many more millions of dollars are the Republicans willing to give to the so called "liberal media" before they get a clue?

I am inviting Republicans to join with the rest of us to stop this give away to the "liberal media" and work to overturn Citizens United before it is too late. Your party is almost destroyed, you have lost countless millions of dollars. The young people in this country will not support you no matter how much you spend to influence them. They want actions not commercials. Think of how much the Citizens United decision has done for the media you conservatives despise. If the media is truly liberal as most of you believe, put your money where your mouth is and help the rest of us overturn Citizens United before it's too late.

How To Protect Your Vote In A Crooked County, Or On An Electronic Voting Machine

Brad Friedman has some tips for voting and making sure everyone's vote counts.

First and foremost:
  • If you have problems or see problems at the polls, be sure to report them to866-OUR-VOTE, or atOurVoteLive.org!
  • Catch any problems at the polls on photo or video? Upload it to YouTube and social sites, and tellVideoTheVote.org! Also tag it with the #VideoTheVote hashtag.
  • Be at the polls when they close and photograph and video tape the results tapes that are printed out from electronic systems. Results have a way of changing between the time they're printed out at the close of polls and the time they show up on the web. Your photographic evidence could help save an election!
  • Watching results on the web throughout the night? Take screenshots, save them as you go, and include a timestamp in the filename when you do. Those web results also have a way of changing, sometimes in the wrong direction, throughout the night. Your evidence could help save an election!
Vote on a Paper Ballot!
  • In some places, it may be too late to vote on paper ballots. In others, know your rights and whether you are entitled to vote on a paper ballot if you wish, even if they try to direct you towards an electronic voting system. For example, in OH and CA every voter may vote on paper if they wish and if they know to ask for one. So (politely) demand a paper ballot! Check with your County Clerk or Sec. of State if you're not sure.
  • A touch-screen system with a little paper printout is NOT a paper ballot! Those paper printouts are never counted and your vote will be 100% unverifiable, like Barack Obama's foolishly was. We made this short toon to explain that point quickly in 2008, so let's roll it out once again...

Voting Machine Hacked To Play Pac Man
They are only doing it in large cities and precincts but an analyst says he has proven that Republicans are indeed stealing the vote. The fact that this can happen has been Brad  Blog's charge since he came on the scene to warn us against paperless electronic voting machines. This story however, does not include Brad Friedman.

Every Picture Tells A Story Donut?

This morning the sky looked like there were supposed to be musical notes drawn into the lines. It was a beautiful day and everyone was jet setting or surfing the magnificent surf that was not so large but was breaking nicely.

The U.S. Coast Guard flew over the scene as the sun was setting over Pilot Rock and Trinidad Bay. They flew over my house a bit  later on.
Who could blame them. It was a perfect night to catch a wave or go for a flight. There were no donuts involved in the making of this post. Sorry, I lied about that part to get your attention.

Trinidad Ramp Closures All Week / Lighthouse Grill Review

If you're heading to Trinidad this week there are two things that you should know. First is that the Lighthouse Grill is now open and second is that there will be road closures.
Caltrans has announced that there will be intermittent full closures of the US 101 north bound off ramp and on ramp Monday - Friday from 9 pm until 6 am. The southbound on ramp will also face closures this week so plan accordingly.

Now about that Lighthouse Grill, they are indeed open 11 am until 8 pm and closed Wednesdays. Located just feet from the freeway in front of Murphy's Market and across from the post office it has location, location going for it.  I had the pleasure of having dinner there last night. I had a Humboldt Grass Fed burger with cheese and bacon and fries. The bun seemed to be homemade and it had some density to it but was not too heavy.  I washed it down with a Steelhead beer on tap. They have an IPA and Lost Coast Brewery root beer also on tap. Wine is also available. There are,  among other things salads, chicken, beef brisket and fish n' chips and what I think was a surf board with daily specials on it. They also have a homemade savory waffle cone made there and filled with mash potatoes and gravy for $3.00 add a dollar and you can get cheese and bacon on top of that or go all the way and for 5 dollars you can have all that and beef brisket.
They make their own ice cream cones also, as well as the ice cream itself. They had about 6 or 8 flavors last night from a honey gram or chocolate chip mint to the salted caramel, that's the one I had. It was fantastic. If you cant' decide they have spoon samples.

In closing, the food is great and the new owners, Chuck and Sherry Vanderpool, seem to be great people. They try to get their ingredients from as many local sources as possible and can be found frequenting local farmers markets when they are in season. They have been doing this for their delivery business "Humboldt Homemade Meals" so they already know where the good stuff is at.

Their hours again ,11 am to 8 pm closed Wednesdays.
The off ramp closures again for you Cher Ae' Heights folks is off and on intermediate closures 9 pm till 6 am all this week through Friday. You can also try calling 1-800-427-7623 for current closures or go to www.dot.ca.gov.

So How Long Did Democrats Really Control Congress Under Obama?

Not very long.  It turns out that it was about 5 months if you don't account for the 2 months they were off during summer recess.

Trinidad Arts Night Showcase New Venue, The Lighthouse Cafe.

Trinidad Arts Night Showcase New Venue, The Lighthouse Cafe.

The lights were on, the patio had people in it, there were wonderful smells in the air and it was the soft opening of The Lighthouse Cafe in Trinidad Ca.  The new digs had art work from Bea Stanley on the walls and live music from Joe Garceau. It was after all, Trinidad Arts Night.

I would have stayed as I was invited by one of the owners while taking pictures but I had a prior engagement. The vibe was good and people seemed happy sampling morsels of food that will be on sale Monday, October 8th. when they officially open.

Eureka To Introduce New Anti-Homeless Laws

By Charles Douglas
Humboldt Sentinel

It’s not every day when Eureka looks to follow the example of Arcata.
Photo from The Humboldt Sentinel
Turning decades of municipal rivalry on its head, Eureka is looking up to its smaller municipal brethren across Humboldt Bay — at least when it comes to firing off a fresh round of anti-homeless laws.
Fresh on the heels of a 4-1 Council approval of stiffening the ban on sleeping in public by boosting the legal definition of this famous crime from an infraction to a misdemeanor, City Attorney Cyndy Day-Wilson has cooked up two separate sets of amendments to city code on the eve of next month’s general election — one in which the sole dissenting Councilmember, Linda Atkins, faces stiff opposition for her Ward Two seat.

California Republican Party Breaks With National Party Over Tax Breaks

The national Republican Party has had the platform that lower taxes on business means more jobs. The Governor of California just sided with that philosophy and now the local Republicans in California are up in arms over tax cuts for business because they say it doesn't work. In fact they say, "that sound economic logic doesn't apply to every other aspect of the economy".

Here is a press release from the California Republican Party that was just released today.

California Republican Party Statement on Gov. Brown Signing Bill Extending Tax Breaks for Film Industry
BURBANK -- The California Republican Party today made the follwing statement regarding California Governor Jerry Brown signing Assembly Bill 2026, which extends the $100 million annual tax break for California motion picture companies:

"Gov. Brown just signed the bill that extends tax breaks for the film industry. Presumably, the Governor believes that the lower tax rates will provide incentives for more films to be made here, resulting in more jobs. More jobs will result in more tax revenue because working people pay more taxes.

"Someone needs to ask the Governor why that sound economic logic doesn't apply to every other aspect of the economy. We need to ask Gov. Brown why he wants want to raise taxes on small businesses through Prop 30 but lower them for the film industry?"

Rainbow Around The Sun, Is A Storm Coming?

To answer my own question, no. The 7 day forecast from the National Weather Service says sunny skies through Wednesday.

There are a lot of contrails in the sky today over Eureka/Arcata/McKinleyville.  These aren't visible along the coast due to low fog but if you get a couple of blocks inland you could see the circle in the sky around the sun and lots and lots of contrails.  Some say that these are chemtrails as shown in this video. Either way locals can forget about an Autumn sky of blue today.

Humboldt County's Great Shame

Eureka, California - After months of efforts to bargain a historic first wage increase for County IHSS Caregivers, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors (acting as the Governing Board of the IHSS Public Authority) rejected a Fact Finder’s recommendation to increase wages for over 1,400 County IHSS homecare workers. The Fact Finder understood the urgency and growing health care crisis facing the residents of Humboldt County. The Fact Finder referred to his ruling as “fair and equitable,” stating that the reasons for his ruling were “numerous.”

“This is beyond shameful, it is offensive and says more about their commitment to turn their backs on our County’s most vulnerable and the Caregivers who change adult diapers,” said County IHSS Caregiver Antoinette Skiles when she learned of the Supervisor’s response to the Fact Finding Report. “We use money out of our own pockets to care for people who would most likely be in nursing homes without us. We love the people we care for and that’s why we do it. But we shouldn’t be punished because we have a heart,” she added.

In his ruling, the Fact Finder emphasized that, “The County clearly has the ability to pay the modest increases sought,” and that the homecare workforce, which is comprised primarily of women and minorities, is paid significantly less than every other County employee. Many facts included in the Fact Finding Report, such as the Supervisor’s willingness to increase their own salaries while homecare wages remained stagnant over the years, were accentuated by a recommendation that stated, “When it came to the issue of wages and healthcare benefits for care providers, the Union makes the more compelling case.”

The two day Fact Finding Hearing covered an exhaustive amount of data and testimony from County Caregivers, recipients and university professors Eileen Boris and Candace Howes. Both Boris and Howes are national experts on long-term care whose efforts have been used to influence national, state and County long-term care legislation. After reviewing documents and testimony from the County and CUHW, the Fact Finder awarded his decision: Humboldt County IHSS Caregivers deserved better.

Last Tuesday the Board of Supervisors met in closed session to discuss the Fact Finding Report, ultimately not only refusing to implement the report’s recommendation but also attempting to discredit the Fact Finder in the process. In an official statement released on behalf of the County IHSS Public Authority the County claimed that the Fact Finder “misunderstood” important concepts during the hearing. In that same official statement, the County repeated that its refusal to grant a wage increase to County IHSS Caregivers was, “due to the County’s finances,” this despite admitting during the Fact Finding hearing that it in fact had budgeted enough to provide the requested wage increase.

The Supervisor’s recent rejection of the Fact Finder’s recommendation follows their rejection of a mediated settlement proposal last July that also called for a wage increase for County IHSS Caregivers. CUHW has filed an Unfair Labor Practice against the County and will continue its efforts to work with the residents of Humboldt County to achieve justice for its most vulnerable populations and those who care for them.

Call the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors (707.476.2396) today and tell them: The facts don’t lie. Implement the IHSS Fact Finder’s Recommendations and be fair to those who care. End the shame of minimum wage:

One Restaurant Opens, Another One Closes

One restaurant opens and another closes here in Trinidad Ca.

I went to The Trinidad Bay Eatery this morning and noticed that there were no cars in the parking lot.  That's strange I thought, they must be closed.  A sign on the door said Closed and the place was cleared out.  There were only empty shelves in The Gallery gift shop that was in the same building. I was sad. What could have possibly happened to make such a busy restaurant just close without warning?  They had been going non stop since 1975.

I called the phone number for the Eatery and got the former owner, Carolyn Phillips. She and her husband Sam still own the building but had sold the business 10 years earlier.  She said that she and Sam had sold their house in the bay area and moved back up to live above the now empty restaurant. Carolyn also said that the people that were running the place left when their 10 year lease was up.  They had two 5 year options but decided not to exercise them. There is more to the story but most important is that the business could reopen if someone wanted to sign a new lease.  Here is your chance to run a successful business in beautiful Trinidad half a block from the Lighthouse and the Pacific Ocean. If you are truly interested in this call Sam or Carolyn Phillips at 707-677-3777.

Across town where Kashie's Catch Cafe used to be is a newly refurbished Lighthouse Grill almost ready to open. An addition to the building will allow for inside dining. They will offer burgers, fish, beef brisket, savory waffle cones and homemade ice cream. The new owners already run Humboldt Homemade Meals and they try to use as many local ingredients as possible with Humboldt Grass Fed Beef and buying from the local farmers markets and other resources. I have tasted some of their catering and can say for sure that these people know what they are doing. They deliver from Trinidad to Eureka and if you are interested in their meals check the link above.  I am looking forward to their grand opening soon, they are hoping that will be in about two weeks from now, give or take a bit.
