Northern California's Bull Kelp Forests Are Being Eaten By Urchins

An article in The Press Democrat out of Santa Rosa explores the devastation going on just off the California Coast. Millions of tiny purple sea urchins are eating the Bull Kelp down to the roots or those things that kelp use to cling to the rocks with. The sea stars used to eat the urchins but those too all but disappeared a couple of years ago.
(The above rock used to be covered with Sea Stars or starfish as most people call them. I took this picture in April of 2015 from the Trinidad Pier. They say the die offs started in 2011.)

It's like locusts but in the ocean. The article has input from, scientists, divers and fishermen all describing a massive die off taking place just off shore. Factors such as acidification and warmer water are being discussed as the main culprit for species getting all out of whack.

They say it's still to early to say exactly what is causing all of the problems, but do say that most kelp will come back if it is given a bit of space and time to grow. It may be possible that the ocean could cool down a bit and things go back to the way it was before. You know, back when we were more focused on the pending radiation from Fukushima and not a total collapse of the ocean food chain.
Do read the lengthy article here and if you can help, see below.

State scientists are seeking help with data collection and other activities, as well as observational accounts, photos and videos related to the urchin barren. Shared images and information should, if possible, include the date, location and depth at which they were acquired. Contact Cynthia Catton at Cynthia.Catton@wildlife.ca.gov or 875-2072.

SUV Takes Out Part Of Patio & Hits Lighthouse Cafe Trinidad

No one was injured in the accident this evening sometime after 6 pm at the Lighthouse Grill in Trinidad Ca.

People were shaken up when the vehicle sped up right when it was expected to stop. It jumped the wheel curbs and took out the solid wooden fencing and gate at the corner of the patio. The Ford SUV then met the wall of the building just a few short feet from where Tony Roach was entertaining the crowd on the other side.

The Lighthouse Cafe is open every day from 11 am to 8 pm and has live entertainment on Sunday nights from 5 to 7.

It however does not have a drive in.

About Those Holes In Shoreline Rocks

Francie Diep had a great story last year about the sea urchin and sea star die off along California's coast. You should read it here.  The culprit was an algae bloom. The likes of which was one of the most unusual and dramatic die-offs marine biologists have ever recorded according to the article.

What interested me was this picture.  It shows how those holes are made all over rocks. I guess I had never thought about it before. That's what it looks like when a species gets evicted.
On a brighter note there is this story from the daily mail that says the sea stars are starting to mount a comeback.

Westhaven Center For The Arts Spring Fling Sunday

This Sunday, May the 8th., is the Westhaven Center For The Arts "Spring Fling" fund raiser.

The Compost Mountain Boys and Tim Breed will perform at the 1 to 4 pm event with a raffle at 4:30 pm. (be sure to check the raffle out)

Grill masters Randy Martinez, Vaughn Beer & Stephen Spoelman will Bar-B-Q Chicken, Ribs & Tofu Burgers at reasonable prices.

There will be easel painting as well as face painting, and a Spring themed raffle.

Come rain or shine, all food and refreshments are reasonable price they say.

The concert is free but you should put something into the raffle because the odds are much better than at the usual betting places, at least in my experience.  Your experience may vary. Food and beverages were decent prices or as they say reasonable for some great stuff hot off the grill.

 When: 1 - 4 pm Sunday, May 8th. 2016

Where:
 Westhaven Center For The Arts
