Chad Bushnell At Tonight's Eureka Summer Concert

Country musician Chad Bushnell will play the Eureka Summer Concert in Old Town tonight from 6 to 8 pm. This is the second of 10 concerts for the season which all take place on  Thursday evenings at the foot of C Street on the Eureka waterfront.

Last week's concert with Boston Rocks was cut a bit short due to rain. Tonight looks to be a great night for a concert though. Bring your own chairs and snacks. No dogs or alcohol please.

Eureka Summer Concert Series Returns This Thursday

 Boston Rocks a tribute band to the 1970's band Boston will play from 6 to 8 pm on the Eureka waterfront at the end of C Street in Old Town.

Governor Brown Signs Bill Allowing Undocumented Workers To Purchase Health Insurance

California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill into law allowing unauthorized immigrants to buy health insurance on a state exchange created under the U.S. Affordable Care Act, making the state the first in the country to offer that kind of coverage.

The law lets the state request a waiver from the federal government that will be needed to allow unauthorized immigrants to purchase unsubsidized insurance through Covered California, the state’s healthcare exchange.

“Today we ask the federal government to remove another barrier to health insurance access that discriminates against some of our residents on the basis of their documentation status,” said Senator Ricardo Lara, the bill’s author, in a statement.

Brown, a Democrat, signed the bill on Friday, according to the governor’s website. His office was not immediately available for comment.

The Los Angeles Times reported that if the waiver is approved, it would allow as many as 390,000 immigrants to purchase healthcare insurance through the state’s exchange.

Opponents of the legislation have said it would unnecessarily cost California taxpayers and strain the state’s healthcare system.

About 7 percent of California’s population, or 2.6 million people, lack legal immigration status. In 2012, the state spent more than $600 million on emergency room and other health-related services for people living in the state illegally.

A new study on immigrant contributions at the University of Southern California has revealed that undocumented immigrants in California make up 10% of the workforce and contribute $130 billion to the gross domestic product, the LA Times reported.

The study, conducted in conjunction with the California Immigrant Policy Center, explores the various ways that the estimated 2.6 million immigrants who lack legal status participate in state life, with a particular focus on their contributions to the state’s GDP. The study found that most immigrant workers lack basic civil rights protections and are faced with the daily threat of family separation and deportation due to the federal government’s inability to create a “rational immigration system.”

Other key findings in the report with respect to undocumented immigrants in California include:

58% do not have health insurance
38% work in the agriculture industry
Half have been in the state for at least 10 years
Three quarters live in households that include U.S. citizens
Of the 4.4 million immigrants living in the greater L.A. region, 1.1 million are undocumented, contributing $57 billion to the regional GDP
And yet, CIPC says the undocumented immigrant population in California has suffered some 117,000 deportations in recent years from one deportation program alone.

The findings come in the midst of increased debate over major immigration reform. Obama has vowed to use his executive power to make changes in deportation policies, but has been met with strong opposition from congressional members who favor stricter restrictions on immigration.

Advocates for more inclusive immigration policies say the economic contributions of immigrants are a primary reason they should be allowed to stay.

“Every one of California’s immigrants helps shape our state’s economic and civic vitality, but the daily threat of deportation casts a shadow over California’s undocumented residents—and their loved ones and communities,” said Reshma Shamasunder, executive director of the California Immigrant Policy Center in a press release. Shamasunder says these undocumented residents contribute over $130 billion to the state’s GDP and President Obama should honor these contributions in the interest of economic prosperity. The group is calling upon the Obama administration to recognize the contributions of immigrant workers and strengthen the stability of their communities.

What sticks out to me were the numbers that 58 percent were uninsured. Will allowing undocumented workers to buy health insurance help? GDP is a different measure than income or profit so there isn't really $129 billion, 4 hundred million dollars left over after paying for all of their costs of 600 million. But the numbers still seem to favor that they are an economic asset to this state and the state insurance pool needs more people in it.

Dear Supervisor Lovelace and Members of the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors,

Over a month ago the Human Rights Commission (HRC) made an urgent call to you to proactively intervene in the planned displacement of 150 to 200 people living in the Palco Marsh in Eureka, asking you to do whatever possible to stop this action violating human rights and to invoke a higher authority if necessary. We have not received a response from the Board. We have not seen or heard a public comment from the Board addressing those who have been disbursed and whose lives are in greater danger due to this disbursement.

The Commission recognizes its responsibility is to make recommendations to the County Board of Supervisors regarding all human rights issues. Thus, the Commission has advised and continues to urge the Board to fulfill the following requests immediately:

Declare an Emergency Shelter Crisis.
Collaborate with the City of Eureka to resolve this crisis.
Designate areas in the County for homeless/houseless people to live in a legal, safe and healthy place until such time as the Homeless Strategy and Implementation Plan is fully implemented and permanent housing is available;
Encourage the city to designate long-term legal, safe living places to be available for homeless/houseless people until such time as the Homeless Strategy and Implementation Plan is fully implemented and permanent housing is available;
Encourage the respectful treatment and decriminalization of all homeless/houseless people in Humboldt County.
With the exception of approximately 40 Palco Marsh campers taking up residence in the Containers on 3rd Street, those previously living in the Marsh are now on the streets. They are seeking shelter in greenbelts, getting ticketed and arrested, losing their personal property, and as a group, more than ever, experiencing an inability to obtain safe, legal shelter. Their health and safety is threatened now more than ever. The majority of them have disabilities. Many have dual disabilities. They can't stay here and there is no place for them to go. These are your constituents as are many of their children, parents and grandparents. Despite the recommendations of Focus Strategies, numerous advocacy groups, many individuals, and much evidence that disbursing encampments is not advised for reasons of creating more instability and potential health and safety hazards for all, the Palco Marsh encampment was disbursed with few places for people to go day or night. A federal court judge on behalf of 11 plaintiffs living at the Palco Marsh, in a suit against the City of Eureka and its Chief of Police, on Friday April 1, 2016, granted a Temporary Restraining Order for the scheduled May 2 eviction because he recognizes the residents would sustain great harm in being removed from their homes in the encampment with nowhere to go.

The Commission urges the Board of Supervisors to take immediate action to establish legal campgrounds and safe parking areas throughout the County. We advise the board to follow through with all items the Commission recommends above. Ignoring the Commission's call for a Shelter Crisis Declaration, and not providing safe places for those residents now displaced throughout Humboldt County, clearly exacerbates problems of daily living for the houseless, those most in need among your constituents.

The Commission further advises the Board of Supervisors to move forward with community partners on immediate affordable, safe, legal alternatives such as sanctuary camps and safe parking programs for the large number of homeless in Humboldt until such time as the Homeless Strategy and Implementation Plan is fully implemented and permanent housing is available. As always, the HRC is prepared to help the Board of Supervisors and invites suggestions from the Board as to how the HRC can be of service.

Looks Like California Will Have Two Democrats For US Senate In November

I haven't scanned all of the counties but the vote has been holding up as they come in. It looks like California Attorney General, Kamala Harris will likely face off with Democratic Representative Loretta Sanchez. As of 11:32 pm local time.

One Thing To Remember In The Democratic Primary, Super Delegates Don't Vote Until July 28th.

About the math being used by the main stream media, especially the cable
outlets. You can't include the Super Delegates that Hilary Clinton has until they actually vote which is July 28th.

 The above graphic is a screen shot from the MSNBC web site tonight or 6-5-2015. Below is what the actual count is before the Super Delegates vote on July 28th.

So Hillary Clinton is ahead in the delegate count by 290 delegates. California has 475 delegates up for grabs so, we shouldn't be announcing winners until all of the people have voted and that includes the Super Delegates on July 28th.

The fact is, since some of them have been chosen, some have changed their minds. But none of that really matters right now because they don't vote until July 28th.

What really matters is that you vote on Tuesday in California, New Jersey, North and South Dakota, Montana, New Mexico and the District of Columbia.
