A Tree With Two Kinds Of Leaves?

From UC Davis California

Redwoods have two types of leaves, one to make food and the other to absorb water

Study is first to estimate whole-crown water absorption in a large, mature tree

Leaf types shift places on the tree depending on if environment is wet or dry

Findings can help scientists monitor trees’ adaptability amid a changing climate

Redwoods are among the most well-studied trees on the planet, and yet their mysteries continue to surprise and delight scientists and nature lovers.

Scientists from the University of California, Davis, discovered that redwood trees have two types of leaves, and those leaves have completely different jobs, according to a study in the American Journal of Botany. Together, these functionally distinct leaves allow the world’s tallest trees to thrive in both wet and dry parts of their range in California, without sacrificing water or food.

The GOP Is Actually Running on Raising Taxes on the Poor and Destroying Medicare and Social Security

 Check this out.

Some in the GOP want to make the poor and impoverished pay Federal Income Taxes. This is real. Rather than raise the national minimum wage to a "living wage" at full time, they just want to put the squeeze on those not as fortunate as the billionaires that fund their GOP campaigns.

The poor already pay taxes if they have a phone or internet, not to mention sales taxes in most places on everything but cold food. Then there are excise taxes, disposal fees, transportation taxes, gas taxes, utilities taxes and other taxes and fees. As a proportion of income, the poor pay a much larger percentage of taxes than millionaires and billionaires.

The story below is from Common Dreams dot org. There are no commercials, fees or hoops to jump through. If you like the site, make a donation if you can.

No Easy Way To Be Free

In light of the recent news from Europe, I have no answers, solutions or eloquent words to share, just a song. Music can go beyond words.

Although this is about a civil war which our country has gone through, the current events and Russian aggressions against civilians in Ukraine is not the same. However, it should remind us that we must always be diligent to call out injustice and war crimes where they exist.

No easy way to be free.

Listen To The Who and Slip Kid

Lyrics
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight ...
I've got my clipboard, text books
Lead me to the station
Yeah, I'm off to the civil war
I've got my kit bag, my heavy boots
I'm runnin' in the rain
Gonna run till my feet are raw
Slip kid, slip kid, second generation
And I'm a soldier at thirteen
Slip kid, slip kid, realization
There's no easy way to be free
No easy way to be free
It's a hard, hard world
I left my doctor's prescription bungalow behind me
I left the door ajar
I left my vacuum flask
Full of hot tea and sugar
Left the keys right in my car
Slip kid, slip kid, second generation
Only half way up the tree
Slip kid, slip kid, I'm a relation
I'm a soldier at sixty-three
No easy way to be free
Slip kid, slip kid
Keep away old man, you won't fool me
You and your history won't rule me
You might have been a fighter, but admit you failed
I'm not affected by your blackmail
You won't blackmail me
I've got my clipboard, text books
Lead me to the station
Yeah, I'm off to the civil war
I've got my kit bag, my heavy boots
I'm runnin' in the rain
Gonna run till my feet are raw
Slip kid, slip kid, slip out of trouble
Slip over here and set me free
Slip kid, slip kid, second generation
You're slidin' down the hill like me
No easy way to be free
No easy way to be free
No easy way to be free

A Serious Injustice Is Taking Place In California And It Is Ruining Lives

If you have been accused of a crime in California you may be arrested. Once in custody however, things get murky. One would expect a trial and sentencing. Either you broke the law and have to pay the price or you prove you didn't and they set your free. That isn't the way it is working. People are sitting in jail for years without being tried or sentenced. Some without so much as a preliminary hearing.

This is a dark side to our state that cannot stand if we are to believe in true law and order anymore. You can't just hold people behind bars for years over an accusation.

A few years ago I got a sneak peek of the California Judicial System from the inside and believe me, it is not a place that you would want a friend or family member to have to endure.

To be fair, those with families that have money can usually pop for the bail money and be on the streets after their first hearing.

That hearing is supposed to take place in less than a week. But that isn't happening for everyone in the system.

Although the following is almost a year old now, I'm sure a lot of people missed it or just don't care that we are housing people against their will that have not had a trial or been sentenced. The cost to tax payers to house people that have not been proven to have broken the law is astronomical.

Robert Lewis at Cal Matters put together some startling statistics about what I witnesses with my very own eyes and it should scare the hell out of you.
Here is a sample:
DeAndre Davis has been waiting 651 days in a Sacramento County jail. Charged with the murder of a 21-year-old man shot during a robbery in 2019, he hasn’t been tried and he hasn’t been sentenced — and he hasn’t even had a preliminary hearing to decide if there’s enough evidence to take him to trial.
